Possible solution for many (trick some may not know about--see ETA)
I found the Marshmallow update file once, a few days ago, in /data/fota. I deleted it and got back nearly 1G of internal storage. But now the update file has been downloaded again--and it isn't in /data/fota. I have no clue where it is; and I've spent a day trying to find it with the terminal emulator, ES File Explorer, adb shell from my PC.
I'm stumped.
I need to get a couple more months of usefulness out of this handset, and I don't know what to do.
ETA: While not addressing the issue of the upgrade file specifically, I found another trick to recover a significant amount of internal storage. Most people here are familiar with the SD Maid tool, but it's likely not everyone is taking full advantage of the Corpse Finder tool. To do this, in SD Maid go to Settings=>CorpseFinder, then make sure that the options for all of the directories are checked. In my case it increased free internal storage from 1.5G to 3.1G--a real lifesaver!
However, I'm not sure if this feature works on unrooted phones. IIRC SD Maid will run on stock phones, but some features may be disabled.
ETA 2 2017-02-16: And now the SD Corpsefinder tool also seems to be a one time only deal. Now it never finds more than a few KB to delete, and I'm back down to 1.5G free space.
Running out of options here.
Gotta love how NO ONE can tell us WHERE the OTA FILE is located. Instead, advice for everything else is given.
Any way that we can get an answer to the OP question???
