HELP! How to stop the GB download/install?

I recently looked to see if the update had arrived but did NOT download it or select "later" -- I backed out of it. Now, the reminder will pop up saying "will download in 25 seconds" if I do nothing. And it started! For now, I do NOT want to install GB, I've powered off, and have removed the battery.

What can I do to ensure that there will not be an unattended, automatic install of 2.3? I'm stock Froyo. I want control of my DX back!

Thanks for any advice.

As far as I know once the update receives request it will nag until installed or will auto update unattended.. Are you rooted, if so the update wont complete anyway...

You can decline install but I think oy will still try to force you..

I am still on Froyo & don't get asked to update anymore. All you have to do is freeze the system app "Updater 2.2.1"
You will have to be rooted & use an app that can freeze system apps (Titanium Backup Pro is $5.99, Bloat Freezer is $.99, AntTek App Manager is free) all will do it.

When you decide you do want Gingerbread (if at all), all you need to do is thaw the app & pull the update manually.

A suggestion, but I do not know if it will work: Try and "clear data" from the updater application. Unfortunately, you are past the point of no return, the download has been initiated and so Clearing the Data would be your only hope, if it works.

If you are past the point of no return, just SBF back to 2.2.1 & do the method I suggested.

@Jefe - It looks like she is on stock Froyo (in her post) + she has 25 sec. before update completes download. Which means if download completes she will be on official GB and there is no way to root.

The way I read it was that she powered down & pulled the battery before the download/install finished. Where does the OTA update.zip store to? Could she boot up into recovery & wipe the cache partition to remove it?

I know she can't root the OTA GB, but I thought you could still SBF back to Froyo from GB (assuming she just lets it install) & then root Froyo & freeze the Blur updater, right?

Correct, but the OP has 2 posts + looks like she just joined recently; I would assume she might not be comfortable to SBF (I could be wrong though). Before someone takes this on you have to read, read, read and read...........

Thanks, everyone -- as I suspected I am probably sc----d. I am, in fact NOT rooted and therefore a hostage to the OTA update. I finally had to power my phone on and now the download is complete and the nag screen to install allows declines in exponential time increments, i.e., one hour, two hours, four hours, etc. I have no idea if it's possible to continue declining and stop the update permanently.

I'm new to posting here, but not to reading and have not yet taken the road to root. (Have a stock 3G Xoom as well).

The forced update really stinks. I like control over my devices which is why I'm a fan of Android and not that other OS!

I really wouldn't call it a force update because you said so yourself that you original went looking for update first. Your issue started when you went to check for update... From what I have read most users was not prompted for update until they checker for it.

Since you are not rooted and have no way to stop the notice it spears you are stuck with having to do the update.

Have you called Verizon and see if they can give you a suggestions?

I have to disagree with your logic. Just because the end user views the update status of their device should not trigger an unsolicited, automatic download and install. I did not elect or select any such option to do so which was the point of my post. Very Jobsonian, IMO.

For anyone else in the same situation, the nag screen to install can be postponed continuously (so far), beginning with one hour, two hours, four hours, six hours and I'm now up to 12 hours.

My past experience with Verizon and their knowledge of software has not been positive.

I do not think it is right but the pop up is a bit misleading when it prompted for a update. Since you click later that started the cycle but if you would have pressed home and closed the pop up it wouldn't have asked again until you went to the check update window again. The whole issue is the option you selected. But that's besides the point..

Out of curiosity may I ask why you do not want to accept the update so badly?

I'm on Froyo and do not want to update. Not yet at least. I love how my phone is right now. If it ain't broke, don't touch it is what I go by and right now, I'll stick to Froyo.

I froze Update 2.2.1 and no more annoying message. I don't mind it but I have a feeling I will wake up one day and press update by accident.
