so i got the epic on launch and its my first android phone (pre convert) and so far i LOVE it but... i have been trying to get digital copies of movies to play on the phone with no luck. what am i doing wrong?

Digital Copy media is copyright protected and will not work on the Epic or any other portable device other than those licensed with the software... ie Zune or iPod/iPhone.

well that blows... how do i watch my movies... tried handbreak and having nothing but issues

Wait, couldn't you Handbrake them to rip the copyright off? My cousin's done it before and gotten media to work like that.

ive been trying to use handbreak (new to that as well as android) on my kick *** dvd and it just keeps crashing

I think you need to decrypt your DVDs first then use Handbreak. I've done that with with some of my DVDs to play on my iPod, should be the same I suppose. I'll load up one of my movies that I have here tomorrow and get back to you. ;)

Yeah, you can take over. I haven't used Handbrake that much lately, and I'm a little behind on it. Thanks for helping out.

For transcoding my movies on the Epic I use AnyDVD and ripbot264 (using the Divx Plus setting) to make MKV files with AAC audio. I've done 5 movies and they all work fine.

I suggest searching torrent sites for a program called Requiem. It will remove DRM from itunes digital copies losslessly so that you can use them on any device. Hopefully movie studios will figure out what Fair Use really means sometime in the future.

Handbrake does not break copyright protection, you need to use a ripping program that does. I use Magic DVD Ripper to rip my DVDs to MP4 with no problems. You can use the iPod setting and should work well with the Epic.

DVD Catalyst does all of this for you, and will convert videos perfectly with the Omnia II conversion option. Best $10 I've ever spent.

I could have sworn that my cousin broke the copyright protection through Handbrake as I was watching him, but he could have been using a second program at the time though.

The most important thing is to make sure you have an official license to these videos! AndroidCentral does not want to share information about illegal activity, so the most important thing is that you own it. I doubt there are any issues here though, but just giving people a heads up. :)

Hey Cory, Thanks for the info. I dl'd the program and trying it out. Been looking for a good converter. Much appreciated for the info...

thanks guys ive just read through all the suggestions and am going to try some out. and now worries i own a crazy number of dvds nothing illegal (well unless ripping ur own dvds is against the law)

Movie names and title image

This issue is not directly related to the thread, but somewhat similar. I have ripped some of DVDs to mp4 files and loaded them onto my epic. When I look at them via the Gallery app, the files don't show the movie title or display the first image of the movie.

However, any movie I took using the phone's video camera shows the first image of the movie as the thumbnail.

It makes it very difficult to figure out which movie is which. Is there something I am doing wrong? Or should I be using another app to view these files/movies? Or maybe I should have used another format than mp4?

Thanks.

I am on a Mac, and I use Handbrake, along with VLC, to rip my DVD's. I think I've done about 20 so far, with no issues whatsoever. I also have some digital copies of movies that came with the Blu-ray/DVD combo packs, and I KNOW they won't work anywhere else except iTunes. Whe I rip, I just use "Universal" under the "Apple" setting.

I haven't tried viewing any of my ripped movies on my Epic yet, but now I have a reason to....

I use AnyDVD and Handbrake (they work great together)... with the following settings:

High Profile setting...
Picture: Default (Auto Cropping) (Keep Aspect ratio)
video Filters: DeInterlace (Slower)
Video: Codec: H.264, Framerate (same as source) & Constant Quality
Audio: Automatic, Audo codec: AAC, MixDown: Dolby Prologic II.
Subtitles: Forced Only and Burned In (set to Yes for both).
Chapters: checkmarked.

They look AWESOME, and they contain the 5.1 Audio (so you get the surround sound in the headphones), and they also have subtitles only for when Foreign language is spoken with the above settings.
