I think im ready to take the plunge and root n rom me Evo 2.2 . My first Q is : How do i install the Nandroid 2.0 zip to do a back up ?
1.Does unrevoked 3.21 unlock Nand ?
2. And from there How to use the unrevoked 3.21 .exe to root phone ?
3. Do i need to install the android sdk and the android usb drivers before hand, and how to do that ?

I plan on installing the new Vaelpak 2.1 bfs9 rom and need to know how exactly to do that. But looks like theres problems with bfs9 and need to flash the bfs8 kernal over that.
Any help would be appreciated

* Also, instead of doing a nandroid backup, can i use "titanium backup" after rooting to back everything up ? Does it back up contacts ?

You don't, really. At least not right away. You can't do a Nandroid backup until after you are rooted. It's kind of a Catch-22, in that respect. The "recovery image" that you will install as part of the Unrevoked process will include the ability to do nandroid backups.

Does unrevoked 3.21 unlock Nand?
Yes. This in is contrast to earlier versions of Unrevoked.

And from there How to use the unrevoked 3.21 .exe to root phone?
Well, you'll have to follow the directions. On Windows, you'll have to install Unrevoked, then install some special drivers, make sure that HTC Sync isn't installed, connect your phone, put the phone into the right state, and then run Unrevoked. Check the Unrevoked thread on XDA (and the unrevoked.com website) for all the gory details.

Do i need to install the android sdk and the android usb drivers before hand, and how to do that?
Drivers? Yes. SDK? I'm not sure. Possibly. Go read.

Once you're rooted and unlocked, installing ROMs and kernels is pretty easy. The basic sequence is:

  • Choose what you want to flash, download the files, and place them on your phone's SD card.
  • Boot into the Recovery that you (or Unrevoked) installed earlier.
  • Do a nandroid backup, so you can get back if things go wrong.
  • Wipe the various caches
  • Navigate to the ROM (or kernel) file you downloaded and flash it.

All the other questions about Vaelpak are probably best asked in that thread on XDA, but maybe someone here can chime in.

Also, instead of doing a nandroid backup, can i use "titanium backup" after rooting to back everything up? Does it back up contacts ?
Nandroid backups back up everything. The ROM, the kernel, and every change you've made. Titanium just backs up the stuff you've installed "on top" of a ROM.

Some people use Titanium to restore their programs and stuff to a newly flashed phone. It seems to lead to occasional issues. It's not something I plan on doing. I'll treat all new ROMs as brand new phones.

Google backs up your contents. So that's the one thing you don't really have to worry about backing up.

Once your rooted I would install and pay for the premium ROM manager App... It makes installing and backing up ROM's pretty darn easy... I run two different ROM's now Baked Snack 1.7 and Vaelpak 2.1... With ROM manager you basically have two clicks and your swapped between the ROM's... Installing is easy too. Just move the new ROM to your phone then click on ROM manager and then click install ROM from SD card and your good to go.... Baked Snack is offered as an OTA in ROM manager...

I rooted the long way.... Moving back to 2.1 and then rooting and installing from there.... Have not needed or used the new unrevoked method...
