[Help Needed] How can I root my S4 SGH-I337?

Hello,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-I337 and I want to root it due to the following reasons:

• I want to remove ads
• I want to remove the stupid sd card write protection
• I want to do other things we usually do with rooting an Android device

My device is currently running Android 5.0.1 and I want help rooting it by pointing me to some reliable rooting methods for this device.

I used to own a Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus and I did root it and the root package for that phone was easy to find since it was not a carrier specific device and I also had flashed CM12 on it.

Now the thing is, I couldn't find any rooting threads for this phone, so can anybody please help me?

You'll get full R/W access back with Lollipop. It's just my opinion but why would you want to root & void warranties over things on your list. Removing ads is simple in majority of cases. Just support the Devs that created the apps you use free. Again, just MO.

I totally understand what you are trying to say about the ads.
and while I was fiddling with my phone, I found "Enable SD Card Write Access" in most apps. See that is the thing, why do I have to do that? Write Access should be enabled by default.

But still for some apps, I can't use the SD Card. For example, I can't change my comic books directory in the app ComicRack (take a look at the screenshot)
The "Create" and "Delete" options are greyed out

All you can do is blame Google for taking away R/W access in KitKat then restoring it in Lollipop. Not easy to navigate but at least it's back.

Indeed. I want the same. I made a few attempts, but even though I got a custom recovery on there (tried both CWM and TWRP) and got Superuser installed, the Lollipop ROM wouldn't recognize root properly so it didn't work.I could grant root access to apps, but the system didn't care and denied meaningful access.

I went back to KitKat because I literally need Root to run Titanium Backup and some interface/convenience apps that make up the majority of my use case outside of apps.

I just keep checking Google every few days for a rooted SGH-I337 ROM I can flash...

I should mention that I found a "keep-root-and-update-att-galaxy-s4-to-lollipop-oc3" article at zidroid.com (sorry, I can't post links yet). I did manage to get an AT&T ROM to run with Root, but it was flaky.

BTW, I found that some app or process on my KitKat GS4 intermittently attempted ext-SD access in a way that corrupted the card's contents beyond repair, even with root - and my root SD card access would sometimes quit for 3rd party apps and I would have to turn it off and on and reboot to get it back. It you run KK, you could use Xposed Framework with Wanam (or GravityBox?) as a temporary SD access fix, but I believe you and I really just need a fully rooted i337 lollipop ROM.

After reading your nice reply, I went on a surfing spree on XDA and finally found a guide to root my phone but I had to go back to KK 4.4.4 to root and then update my phone to 5.0.2 to regain the root
So now my phone is Lollipop 5.0.1 (TouchWiz) with root access

Then I wanted to flash a custom recovery and flash CM 12 on it and I found out that:

Unlock and root success!
I recently bought a pre-owned/off contract AT&T-branded GS4 32GB (i337) running Lollipop build OC4, which I intend to use soon on Cricket. I'm happy to report success with unlocking this phone thru AT&T's online unlock request process. From my request submission to successfully unlocking the phone took only 10 minutes. AT&T gives you the 8-digit unlock code, and you can decide when to use it to unlock your phone. You'll need to briefly insert an active SIM from a non-AT&T carrier to complete the unlock process using the simple and clear instructions from AT&T. You are given a max of 5 attempts to successfully unlock your phone. After 5 unsuccessful attempts the phone is permanently locked to AT&T, so be careful.

Next, I'm also happy to report quick and easy success with rooting this phone using Wondershare-MobileGo, then run its One-Click Root, which also installs the SuperSU app. You can take the following steps, but do so AT YOUR OWN RISK:
1. Go to Phone Settings->more->About Device
2. Tap on "Build number" seven (or more) times quicly
-- this will unlock the developer tools
3. Tap the back arrow
4. Tap "Developer options"
5. Tap on "USB debugging" to enable
6. Go to wondershare.com, download free 15-day trial of MobileGo, install
7. Run MobileGo
8. Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable. Ensure your phone is correctly detected by MobileGo.
9. In MobileGo, click on the "One-Click Root" button...
10. Rooting takes about 2 minutes - which I confirmed success using Root Checker app
I also later installed and ran TitaniumBackup. If you want the TB backup file to be written to your ext SD card (vs internal phone storage), then you'll need to find a way to grant R/W permission for your ext SD card. I did it easily using the SDFix app.
After all was done, I uninstalled MobileGo from PC and the phone - no longer needed.
