Hi all.

I have a new N6 due tomorrow here in the UK and I always really struggle to migrate from one device to another, moving the content.

I have a LG G3 running lollipop with an sd card in.

My Google play music I have one of those monthly passes is all on sd card. Please tell me I won't have to go downloading everything again!?

Apps - I have some on sd I moved them with a little app that can move apps.

My wallpaper picture of me and my daughter, don't want to lose it.

Hope for some help. Thank you.

When I was setting up my nexus 6 it asked me if I want to configure my phone same as other device I have by tapping it. I was setting my phone from scratch so not sure what does it sync precisely, but that one option might be what you need

Tap and Go option during set up. You just enable NFC and tap the backs of your phones. Apps and settings should transfer over.

When I first got the phone, I used the feature several times. I had a problem with ambient display, and playing with the setup required a few resets as I investigated possible causes.

What I found was that it was valuable, but not totally reliable. It didn't bring over all of app preferences that I had set up.

I'd suggest that you take the following steps. Once you've done it a couple of times you'll see that it's not as complicated as it sounds. It's the same strategy as you'd use to restore a corrupted file on your desktop from the backups you've been keeping (we ALL do that religiously, don't we ;)

On your current phone, go to preferences and backup your current settings. This constructs a backup folder if you haven't done it yet or overwrites the file that you have. Connect your phone to your computer as a 'storage device'. It'll open up as a folder on your Mac via Android File Transfer. Not sure what happens on Windows. Copy the folders with the personal data you want to keep to your desktop. DCIM holds your pictures. There will also be a music folders, one on your sd card and one on your phone's storage. Some of the apps construct a folder that goes in your primary file list. Others hide themselves in the Android folder.

Now that you've got that backup, set up your phone however you'd like (tap and go etc). If any of your app settings aren't transferred appropriately, do a backup up (this will build the folder you'll need on your sd card) Then, connect to your desktop and drag/drop the data files you need from your backup and put them into the appropriate folders.

Google backup and restore has never been reliable. It's a shame because that would be pretty cool if you could turn on a new device and have it automatically set up just like your current device. Apps and their settings/home screens/folders/device settings and all.

This would also take some if the fun out of a new device. I know for some the setup and configuration is half the fun. :)

I didn't realize that Google/Android backup and restore wasn't reliable. I've always assumed it would always work. I guess I've been fortunate to have it work with 5 Android phones and 3 Android tablets so far. I would have to add that it has also been reliable through countless factory resets. I do use Sync2 to sync my people/dialing directory and calendar between my Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and my Android devices. So there's safety there.

Bloody tap and go won't work! Says could not restore from back up on the nexus so annoying

I'd still suggest backing up your files/folders to your computer. Whether for initial setup, or for system crashes/resets, it will hold you in good stead.

Our phones are mini-computers. It follows that they should be backed up for the same reason we should backup our desktops......

What files and folders on my Android devices do I need to back up? I use Microsoft OneNote on all devices and the data is in Microsoft OneDrive. My people/phone list and Calendar is auto backed up by Google and duplicated on Microsoft in Microsoft Outlook. All my Google Apps are automatically backed up by Google. I use Microsoft Office 365 subscription with all data stored in OneDrive on my main computer, a Microsoft Surface Pro 3. I have full access to all my Office data on all my Android devices. All my photos from all cameras are immediately stored on OneDrive. OneDrive data is duplicated in several data centers throughout the country. I'm confident that my data is secure. My Kindle library is backed up by Amazon. And I use LastPass for password management on all my systems. What am I missing?

Basically, I'd say the apps that are specific to your interface with your phone.

I know you use a custom launcher, for instance. I use Apex. Using the backup saves me from having to reset the apps and folders I have on my home screen, or the custom column/row and icon size settings I use.

Also, Folder Organizer is cumbersome to rebuild once since I have organized 50 of my apps in to 10 different folders.

Ok. I don't try to do any folder organization on my Android devices, as every bit (pun intended) of my data is stored in OneDrive, so it's irrelevant to me where my apps are stored on my devices. It only takes me a few minutes to set up my Nova Launcher screen and I rather enjoy keeping it current. So my bases are covered. I can instantly do a factory reset on any Android or Microsoft device or have a crashed system with absolutely no concern for local data, as there is none, it's all securely remote in the cloud.

Also it seems that back up has gotten better over the last year or so. It was a crap shoot 3 years ago. Would still be nice to see out be able to backup phone screen and folder setups and all settings though.
