So, everything appears to be working fine except that I cannot listen to any media audio when going through Android Auto. Phone calls work fine (through blue tooth). No music through the speakers (though the app appears to be working fine on the phone and on the 4100 screen). No audio instructions during navigation (again, the app appears to be working fine on the phone and on the 4100). Help!?!?!?

re:

Welcome to Android Central! On the S6, in Settings>Bluetooth, tap the NEX4100's settings icon. Do you see Media Audio there, and is it checked on?

re:

It's there. It won't let me toggle it to "on." I try over and over again and it won't stay on.

re:

I've been trying that since the day it was installed. The install guy thought it might have been the cable I was using. Went home and used my actual cable and that didn't change things. Now he thinks it may be a defective head unit and he wants me to come in to swap it.

re:

That certainly would be the ideal solution, as long as they don't charge you anything for it. Just to be sure--there isn't anything else in the car that might be connecting to your phone for Media Audio at the same time, right?

re:

There's nothing else connected to BT at the same time. Do you know whether the media audio goes over BT or via cable? If it is over BT, then this toggle issue is a problem. If it goes over cable, then one would expect the BT not to activate.

By the way, thank you so much for your willingness to help. My mind was blown by the lack of resources offered by Google. There isn't even a phone number to call for Android Auto support. Pretty crappy, I think.

re:

Does sound go through your head unit without your phone plugged in? Ie. Radio?

The media sound goes through the cable into the head unit and out to your speakers. BT is only used for your phone calls in android auto.

re:

Also make sure you have Pioneer Firmware v1.03 and the latest android auto, google play services, google app and whatever media app you are using.

re:

Sorry, I don't have direct experience with Android Auto, so I would defer to killab95.

By the way, there is a telephone number: Contact us – Contact us – Google. Can't guarantee that you'll get a prompt answer to your question, but at least they publish it!

re:

Yes, and it even works if I connect the phone to the head unit over BT (without cord) - I can play music (pandora or google music player) that way. I know that I do not have 1.03....I checked that last night. I have 1.00. I'm not sure how to update the firmware b/c my install guy only plugged in the USB2 - not USB1. According to website, firmware can only be updated thru USB1.

re:

You can download the firmware to an SD card and update it with that. It's accessed through the system menu. See page 60 of the documentation.

re:

What posman said, go to the pioneer website and download the latest firmware, it also contains the instructions on how to do so. You just have to put it on an SD card then eject the faceplate to access the SD slot.

Quick note: to install a system update you must have the parking brake on, or have a parking brake bypass installed. otherwise you wont be able to select update.

I had a similar issue right after purchasing my new S6 Edge. What the problem was is that I had a Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync account that came with specific security settings. This is what was causing my media audio not to connect even though I was able to connect the phone via bluetooth to other devices. I was on the phone with Samsung and my carrier for over 1 hour trying to figure this out. How I came to this solution was resetting the phone to factory default and it connected right away with media audio on. Then I started by adding one account at a time until I found the problem account. So if you have a work email account on your device, that may be the problem. Hope this works.
