Hello! I'm new here. My husband got a job in Turkey a month ago so we moved for 1 year. I took my Virgin Mobile LG Optimus 2.2.1 with me to use for apps with the WiFi access. It's all been ok until 2 days ago when I dropped it, the battery fell out and I got stuck in the 80's!!! LOL. It says January 6, 1980 now and there is no way to change that. I took SD card out and did Factory Reset, that didn't change the time either, still in the 1980!
You've got to excuse me, I have no technical knowledge of "rooting" or anything like that. I've been reading here on rooting the phone.
Is it going to solve my problem? Because of the wrong time, date I can't use FB or YahooMail. If only I could fix that! If I do root my phone, does it make it "unlocked"? Will I be able to change time and date?
I've got to mention that Market didn't work either. But that might be because there is no service here???
Please help! If I don't get all the instructions at least my geeky hubby will be able to, LOL!
Thank you! :)

I was out of country also this year and could not find a fix. Now that im on a custom rom the problem is a simple fix. I dont know why they took out the options to change the time and date from the stock rom.

Look at "clock sync" from the market. It should fix your problem. You will have to use the manual mode, but it will allow you fix the time on the system clock.

I've noticed this as well when I take the battery out for at least 5 minutes or so, the clock resets back to January 5th, 1980. To fix it usually I just turn off airplane mode and let it get a signal. Of course I'm in the US, and you're not so that might not work.

I don't know if both Harmonia and IHO ROMs have the ability to set the clock, but they probably do. If you're not rooted however then hopefully riggerman's solution will work.

It doesn't automatically pick up correct date and time from the cell network - because there is no Virgin mobile cell connection where you are.

No need to root or any such thing. Just set date and time manually in the settings menu. I'm on IHO, but I am pretty sure that menu is also available in the stock ROM.

Thank you for your replies. Actually, I did go to the menu first but there is no option to reset the time and date manually. If there was I wouldn't be desperate to find a solution, LOL! Well, what I did end up doing is follow your instructions for gingerbreak to root my phone and it worked!!! I couldn't use Clocksync app without a root, the phone won't let me. After I rooted I used that app and another one to reset the time zone, and there we go, I've got everything fixed! Awesome!
Now, another question is - do I need to do "Install custom recovery image" and "Flash Custom ROM" steps? I only used gingerbreak to root and that's it. I didn't follow the rest of the steps. Do I need those? And what that means? What is that for? Sorry, I'm ignorant, even my husband didn't know what those steps are for.
Please let me know if I'm missing something or if rooting alone is enough.
Thank you!
:D

I apologize, I was certain there had to be a manual date/time option - I am still surprised there isn't.

But you are clearly not as technically challenged as I thought reading your OP, and you took care of it ;)

Custom recovery is really only if you want to install a custom ROM. It also allows you to make a complete backup of you phone.

One important thing: Do NOT use the factory reset option in the menu from now on, it can brick your phone. If you need to reset, boot into recovery (hold Home-VolDown-Power to turn on the phone) and reset from there.

Thank you Dannemand! LOL, no, I'm not that bad! Yes, I read about not using factory reset option, that it results in bricking. I read a few posts of people actually bricking their phones and that scared the daylights out of me, LOL! So I'm going to be careful. I guess I'll have to get custom recovery to be safe? Does rooting mean custom ROM? I guess not?

No, rooting doesn't actually change your phone (much). It simply means you now have the "administrator" permissions necessary to make changes which you couldn't make before.

Custom recovery is merely a tool used to install a custom ROM. The custom ROM is the big difference that takes your phone from the standard Virgin Mobile/Android 2.2 operating system (stock ROM) to something newer and better.

Most people choose either Harmonia (an optimized version of the stock ROM) or IHO (an open source version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread adapted for the OV).

Both are great ROMs that significantly improve the phone's performance and features. The downside is that you lose VMU support and warranty - but you already lost that when you rooted :D

You should study the sticky threads in this forum before you proceed. You want to know what you are doing, not just follow some steps unless you understand what they do. I'm sure you can do it, though.

Enjoy your time in Turkey. Never been there, but I'd love to go sometime.

Thank you! A very good explanation, got it! I'm definitely going to read some more on that before I proceed. Now that I'm learning about all these possibilities it's really tempting to try to install that custom ROM. OMG, I'm turning into a geek! LOL.
It is nice here in Istanbul, a totally different lifestyle that I love! We don't even have to drive, everything you need is nearby, very urban. Everyone walks and takes Metro, the streets are full of people any time of the day. I'm loving it! You really have to come to visit. :D

Sounds great!

I lived in Denmark most of my life, with public transportation and bicycling my main transportation, and only got a car after we moved to USA. So I know what you mean.

I've travelled extensively in Europe, for business as well as leisure, but unfortunately never made it to Turkey.

Hi guys,

I'm having the exact same problem (I'm in Germany with my Virgin phone), but to make matters worse, Market doesn't seem to be connected. I'm using the browser to try to download the suggested ClockSync app, but it says: "This app will be downloaded to your device shortly" but nothing seems to be happening. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

So it's been like 5 months, but in case anyone ends up here.. the android market won't work on wifi. You have to have mobile internet. Way to us, virgin mobile. I have the same problem but afraid to root.
