Hi,

I am looking for a new phone. My demands when looking for a phone are; quick, never slows on me, last me 3-5 years.

My last phone was the OnePlus 1. That failed on me due to it rebooting about 20 times a day. I returned it. Then brought a stop gap phone, but now want a new phone and people in OnePlus forums are advising me to get a Nexus 5x.. so I have come here to the experts.

My store in the UK is selling the 16GB for £200 and the 32GB for £270

I have reserved the 32GB, but would like more advise before purchasing this phone.

Will this phone last me 3+ years?
People have said the battery life is "OK". With time, does it get worse?
It has 2 RAM, but people are saying its very fast with apps. Is this true in your experience?
What are the issues with this phone you have experience?
What are the issues with this phone large groups of people have experienced?
Should I spent £70 more for the 32GB?

Thank you for your time and patience.

I don't see why it wouldn't be a good pick. Per Google, there's still a year of OS updates and two years of security updates planned.

I would wait and get the new Sailfish when it releases; but if that's not an option and you're going to get the 5X, then the 32 option is a must do IMO.

What do you think the price of the Nexus Sailfish will be? 4RAM sounds amazing. Also, does it have a release date?

Did a bit of research on the Sailfish. Depends on the release date where I live (UK) and the price.

The price for 32GB 5X is £270... which is pushing it for me. It's a ear old phone, so I expected at least £240.

But this Sailfish does look worth spending another £100 on. Depends on how they price it here. Also, HTC are making it, while I think 5x was made by LG? Does that change things? [I'm not very knowledgeable in the tech world]

No known release date, my guesstimate is either $450 or $499 for 32 GB but nothing confirmed.

It's difficult to offer a helpful opinion without knowing how you would use the phone. I still have my old Android handsets (hello Motorola Droid 2 with physical keyboard), but I would be unhappy using them now. My usage could be considered "typical" for today as I use my phone all day for business, leisure, paying bills, etc. In contrast I have associates who have carried the same phone for four or five years with no issues. But they use their phones for voice calls and text messages and not much else. So it kind of depends on what you want the phone to do.

I don't call or text on my phone. I'm big on using social media page twitter and maybe instagram. Use internet a lot, hence why i want a fast phone with little delay, but I do not waste much data month to month. Will use the phone for watching videos and transferring onto the phone to watch while using transport. It will be 5x better camera quality, so it would encourage me to take more pictures of what I like. Also, I'd like to use email a lot more on the phone. Not replying, but checking, as I have google alerts on things.

(sorry for poor spelling or anything, its 5am here)

I do quite a bit of video streaming on my 5X and I have no complaints there. Even storing video on the device I haven't had any problems. At the same time, I keep the total number of apps to a minimum. One bad app can bog down the whole phone. While the performance has been overall good, the 5X does get slow at times. I will restart the handset about every 10-14 days. Then I'm back to normal.

The 5X is smooth on 7.0 No RAM problems with 2GB. All the extra RAM buys you is more apps in the background.

I don't think the Nexus 5X can last 3 to 5 years. I have one and even with Nougat 7.0 on it, it is pretty slow compared to my GS7E. Slower Play Store app updates, slower load times, slow camera, etc. Only thing it's faster in has been getting Android updates. 😅

What I wonder is if the Nexus 5X will get all this features of new rumoured Pixel phones like for example Nexus Launcher or it will be left behind with only small updates of close-to-stock Android. In other words, whether the old Nexus phones will be treated same as new Pixel phones in terms of updates remains to be seen.

It's all relative. Mine is running amazing on 7.0, with some rock solid battery life. All day now, which I couldn't say for marshmallow. It's fast, and the camera is great.
If you're really gonna keep the device that long, I would advise stepping up to a device with a SD820. Just my opinion, but that's a rock solid processor compared to the edgy 808 and 810. Not that they aren't good, but battery life and throttling can be an issue. I digress :)

If you actually want it to last 3-5 years wait and get this year's phone instead of one that's about to be phased out. Google going to give it updates for a couple years and after that only security updates. Once security updates are gone it's time to look for another. I don't think you will get to five but getting the current phone in theory gets you one more year on the back end.

Even if the phone can last five years you probably don't want it to. Wireless networks are changing. Older handsets may not be compatible with new network capabilities.

I got mine in late July '16 and I'm very happy with it. I have Nougat running very smoothly on it. I don't regret my decision on purchasing this at all.

I got my Nexus 5x at the first of May. I think it's fine. I did enjoy reading about all the horrible problems some people said they had because I had none of them. I went through the Android 7 beta and thought it was fantastic. I had a problem on the first beta I got with my Kindle app not playing nice but Kindle fixed it. Now, with final Android 7, it runs great.
