As title, I'm having issues trying to install a game that's 1.36Gb in size. According to the system I've got over 1.7gig free

I doubt it's anything to do with compiling files as that what the "unusable" space is for (isn't it)
8gig device with 5.92gig of total system storage.

The installer downloads get's to 1.36gig downloaded waits about 3 seconds and then a message pops up saying there is insufficient storage.

There's probably a limit set by the OS for its functions and you've likely hit it. Most modern operating systems require some free space to work with and you're cutting it way too close.

What you're talking about is only for the pre-installed stuff. The system still requires a portion of free space that can remain free to cache new items, like for syncing. If the system determines that you don't have enough free space, then you'll actually get a warning that syncing is disabled until you free up more space. You can't use up all of your free space.

Update : just tried several times hitting install, in the play store. And each time it downloads 2.5Mb. This 2.5Mb is being deducted from the available space, WTF?

That's fairly standard. You need twice the space to install. It has to download the game, install it, then clean up the download cache. On windows there are segmented installers to help counter this but not here.

It's likely that it's caching the partially downloaded files, but the cache is cleared automatically every once in a while. If you want to clear it now, you can go into Settings, Apps, Google Play Store, and clear the cache. As for your required free space question, I have no idea.

Imo, the 'available space' ought to detract the amount that the OS keeps in reserve even if not directly used at the time, so as to provide a more honest representation of your resources.

On what is probably an unrelated note, I noticed that if I delete a file off the N7 via your PC, the N7 won't 'realize' that space is available until it is rebooted. I.e., if I have 2GB free and want to put on a 3GB movie so delete another 3GB movie I'm done with off, it will only register 2GB free until I power off, and on, the device.

The OS itself doesn't actually keep the space in reserve (it's not completely inaccessible). You can still fill up the free space by doing things like putting movies/music onto the device.

As mkiker2089 pointed out, you need at least twice the size of the install in free space because you need 1.3gb to actually download the install file and then at least 1.3gb in free space (if not more) to install onto. When you're done, you can clear your cache and immediately get back the space lost from the install file, but there's no way around needing at least 2.6gb free. Maybe what you can do is temporarily uninstall other large apps or move other files off your internal storage.

This is exactly the reason why I always get more hard disk space then I think I need. For $50 more, I'll save myself the headaches.

youre right i got down to 86mb and it gave me a notification like "not enough storage space to sync data or something

Yes, I had a very heated debate on the 8 vs 16gb issue. Was told I was an id10t for paying $50 more for only 8gb more, considering an 8gb flash drive or SD card was $10.

This thread is my vindication.

With only 8gb, you need to remove media and stream, or decide which apps to keep and delete the non-essential.

Only other option is rooting and otg storage with stickmount.
