Help with backup

I've been trying to follow the guide posted here (http://www.androidcentral.com/sdk-driver-root-oh-my) to backup everything on my phone, but I'm not getting the found new hardware dialogue, how can I fix this?

Yes, I did everything up to the step with the found new hardware dialogue, but it never popped up.

About to back up my self. Should I use my win 7 laptop or my xp laptop?

win7, i had a smoooth experience with it. I always had troubles with loading of drivers on Vista.

Ethan: have you considered rooting, flashing a recovery image, and using Nandroid backup? I know all of that sounds difficult, but it really isn't. There are some videos in the hacking sub forums you can watch that will help you. Honestly I find this process a lot easier.

I don't really want to mess with rooting my device right now, it seems like this process would be simpler, but for some reason that one box won't pop up. I'll look into your solution if I can't get this one to work at all though, so thanks for your suggestion.
