Hello All,

I have been reading and trying to understand, for a few years. There is a lot of good info here.

I have a HTC EVO 4G, which has been good and bad. Like others, there are a few things that I dislike....

1. the programs that continually start, even after Force Closing, and using Advanced Task Killer.

2. The programs that I don't use/want and can't uninstall.

There might be a few more, but I am in search of some other questions.

I did Root it, shortly after purchase.

I have been having problems with text messages being transmitted differently than composed. Partial messages, severe misspelling, and other problems.

I have also noticed that the name of programs and descriptions, when listed (Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications) are misspelled.

The Application name is in bold, but the description below is a garbled bunch of letters. If I back out of it and then go back in, look at the same App, the description is then, correct.

It made me suspicious of a bug or some other type of corruption, but I don't know.

Here are some particulars about this phone.

Software Info
Android Version 2.2
Baseband Version 2.15.00.09.01
Kernel Version 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e (htc-kernel@and18-2 #11)
Build Number 3.29.651.5
Software Number 3.29.651.5
Browser Version WebKit 3.1
PRI Version 1.77_003
PRL Version 60690

I have looked at other ROMS, but realistically, I don't fully understand what I am looking at. Because of that, I haven't tried a different one.

I quit updating anything, because every update made larger and more aggressive ADVERTISEMENTS. The applications never improved.

I look forward to everybodies' advice and suggestions.

Thanks......

Also how can I guarantee that there isn't something malicious on this phone? (I currently have LOOKOUT installed.)

You mention that you are rooted but do not say whether you are using the stock Sprint ROM or a custom ROM. From the information you provide, you are still using Froyo (Android 2.2) and your radio (Baseband Version) and PRI Versios are out of date. The Android system will start many programs automatically so that using Advanced Task Killer to stop such programs will be counter productive as the system will simply restart the program as needed. Force closes should be less frequent if the phone is updated to Gingerbread (Android 2.3) or possibly ICS (Android 4.0).

I recommend that you first install Amon-Ra v 2.3 custom recovery available from XDA at [Recovery] [09-Feb-2011] RA-supersonic-v2.3 - xda-developers. You should also download and install Baseband Version 2.15.00.12.19 and PRI 2.33_003 available at Radio Update - 1/21/2012 - 2.15.00.12.19. I also recommend that you install WiMax 27243 at the same time (all 3 drivers are available as a single download).

Once you have installed a custom recovery and updated your radios, you need to decide whether you want to install the current stock Sprint ROM or a custom ROM of your choosing. The latest stock Sprint ROM is available from XDA at [ROM][KERNEL] 5.07.651.1 Stock - Rooted - Latest Supersonic OTA - xda-developers (hint download the Deodexed version to save space on your phone) and will still leave your phone rooted. There is a wide variety of custom ROMs available for the EVO 4G; many are listed at HTC EVO 4G Android. If you like HTC Sense, the ROM that I recommend is MikG 3.11 available for download at MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012].

There is a You Tube video describing the process for flashing your phone at Amon-RA Recovery v2.3 for HTC EVO Tutorial/Review Part 2 - YouTube. Before flashing any ROM make sure that your phone's battery is charged 40% or more and make a Nandroid backup of your current software and data.

P.S. Since you are rooted, do not attempt to download Firmware updates over the Sprint network; however, you should use Menu => Settings => System updates => Update profile after you have completed the other updates listed above.

Wow!
Thanks for all of the suggestions.

The ROM that I currently have, is the stock Sprint Version, (if I communicated that correctly)

I will look into/do some homework concerning your advice.

Are there any reasons not to do what you have suggested?

Again, thanks for sharing......

I forgot to add that I use a Mac and and a PC. Can these actions be performed on either?

Thanks......

On EDIT: figured out that it needs to be a PC.....

I have most of the process done.

Here are the particulars and how they have changed.

Software Info
Android Version 2.2 same
Baseband Version 2.15.00.09.01 2.15.00.12.19
Kernel Version 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e (htc-kernel@and18-2 #11) same
Build Number 3.29.651.5 3.29.651.5 CL252548 release-keys
Software Number 3.29.651.5 3.29.651.5
Browser Version WebKit 3.1 same
PRI Version 1.77_003 2.33_003
PRL Version 60690 same

The MikG ROM web page kept hanging up and stopping. Then it wanted to install a bunch of pushy application/programs.

I gave up and I am now downloading the stock version, that was suggested.

Thanks for your help.....

Any suggestions?......

After you flash the latest stock ROM you will have Android version 2.3.5, kernel version 2.6.35-10, and Software Version 5.07.651.1. Don't forget to use Menu => Settings => System updates => Update profile after you have completed flashing the ROM and rebooting your phone.

Also the phone will take quite a while to boot the first time after flashing, typically 10 - 15 minutes. This is normal; just be patient.

Thanks for the reply....

I ended up getting the MikG ROM to download and install.

(This took longer than expected, but most of the time was because of my understanding, or lack there-of. -ha)

I am going through this ROM, now. There are a few things that seem better, but I still can't uninstall some things. I will have to look around the web page that you referred me to. There are a lot of things that I will never use, i.e. Facebook, FriendStream, Peep, Amazon MP3, etc. I want to axe everything that I don't use......

Thanks again for your help.....

The Debloater option of the MikTweaks utility allows you to remove individual programs from the ROM. Be very careful though as you cannot restore an app that has been removed without reflashing the ROM or restoring a previous Nandroid backup. Also, some apps like Facebook and Friendstream are so integrated with the Android OS that they cannot be removed without affecting Android's stability.

A safer way to remove bloat is to install Titanium Backup Pro ($6.58 from Google Play) and use it to freeze individual apps you want to keep from running. This completely blocks the frozen app from running. If your phone's stability remains solid for several days - give it at least one week - with the app frozen, you can safely delete the app.

You should not be experiencing force closings as frequently as in the past; and Advanced Task Killer should not be necessary with this ROM. Although MikG does include Task Manager which will let you kill an app that simply hangs, you should need to use it only rarely. Another plus is Sprint Hotspot is unlocked to allow you to tether a laptop to your phone without additional charges for the service, but you should avoid downloading tons of data as that can give you away to Sprint ;)

Can you tell me what the difference between the MikG ROM and the ROM that is downloaded from here ([ROM] The Classic v0.1.0 - finale - xda-developers)

I have looked through the link to all of the ROMs, but this one looks popular, based on thread replies.

I haven't messed around with either one, yet.

I am curios as to your opinion of the differences/ benefits between the two.

-Thanks.....

Just a list from someone who has experimented with apps safe to remove off of an EVO 4G... Or many HTC phones...

Teeter
Amazon MP3/Kindle
Car Panel
N.O.V.A.
All of Sprint's bloatware (although, I'm trying to remember the name of a Sprint app that if you remove it, you can no longer make payments with your dialer, so...wait! It's Sprint Zone! Keep that if you pay through your phone and other Sprint-related things. If not, get rid of it.)
Peep
Twitter
FM Radio (If you choose)

There are others, but let me get back to the list that I made. I'll update soon. Hope I helped.

MikG 3.11 is a hybrid of Sense 2.1 and 3.0, which was the big thing last year. Tommy Tomatoe's Classic v0.1.0 is based on Sense 1.0, which is what the EVO came with when originally released. No official version of Sense was released for the EVO after Sense 1.0. Tommy Tomatoe has customized and made it very fast than the stock rom. Tommy Tomatoe is still upgrading but Mik is no longer developing for the EVO 4G. Both are good stable ROMs.

Just a follow thru message, to tell what has happened.

I went through the steps recommended above, and downloaded this.

([ROM] The Classic v0.1.0 - finale - xda-developers)

It worked fine, I was able to get everything going. I thought that I'd try the MikG, because of the recommendation.

I tried it, but liked the first one better, so I reloaded it. The Youtube and GooglePlay apps kept crashing and force closing and making errors. So, I reloaded the nandroid backup and tried to start over. I wiped clean and reloaded 3 more times without any success. I still had the same problems with the two apps listed above.

I searched and couldn't find any resolutions, so I loaded up the MikG and everything works. I haven't explored the whole ROM, yet, but it hasn't crashed. (The lack of crashing makes me happy.)

Does anybody have an answer as to why it worked in the beginning, but didn't work on the reload? I suspected that there was an updated file, that I couldn't access, that was making this happen. I also suspected Google.......

In one of my attempts, I even reset to "factory settings/default." That didn't work, either.

Thanks for the help in understanding..........

Flash the Gapps for your OS version.

I assume that Gapps, means Google Apps....

But I am unsure of the process. Do you have any suggestions or even a link to a thread that details it?

Thanks.....
