Hi, new to S9 and google pay so went to a contactless terminal at local shop to test but had to use card manually in end!

Do i have to open google pay app or, as I was led to believe, I just unlock phone with finger print and present to terminal on the homescreen? I did enable NFC beforehand as I assumed that was needed?

Thanks

The app has to be running to do anything. It may not have to be in the foreground (open the app, hit Home, open your shopping list - and the GP app is still running [Back closes an app, Home just runs the launcher]), but if you haven't run GP since the phone was turned on or restarted last, and it's not set to start on boot, it might as well be on someone else's phone.

At the bottom of the main app screen you'll see unlock with fingerprint or pin. You still have to unlock the app itself when you are ready to pay. With Google pay, you can just hold the phone up and it will go though. SP requires that second unlock procedure.

It may be different in your country but here in the UK you don't have to unlock the phone or open google pay. I just press the power button to turn the screen on then get the phone next to the terminal. But this is for payments up to £30.
For payments over £30 I need to unlock the phone first.
Also most of the stores only take contactless payments of up to £30 but it depends on the store. For example I went to ikea and bought stuff for about £180 and tried google pay just for fun and to my surprise it worked just fine ;)

Thanks, I should have said that I'm in UK too. So if j understand correctly, the google pay app can be closed and not running in background and I just press power button and present lockscreen to payment terminal?

Thanks to all for help
