Google Wallet not opening - UK updated.

Seriously, Google, this sucks big time.

I could not open my Wallet to access any Loyalty / Discount cards in my Wallet, formerly Google Pay here, but Wallet for some months. I was going to dump my groceries back on the shelves, until a staff member bypassed it for me. NFC payments still work.

Seeing the app was updated 3 hours before I tried to use it, it's been 48 hours and it still will not open.

What I've managed in the meantime : I cleared cache and data and then uninstalled all updates (it says). At that point Wallet no longer appears in the App Drawer but I can **now open Pay** it from the Play Store app where it's showing as installed.

This brings me to a different default app screen, where my loyalty cards / passes are now in a separate tab. This isn't the latest version, but it's also unlike the layout I had before the 20th May update.

I updated the Wallet app again this evening and it's still stuck in a loop. Press View Wallet on the new app and it loads the same screen.

I see Google Pay will officially end on June 4th. I think Google Wallet was the default in the US for a while but not here. I had the Wallet app for a while and not Google Pay.
The only way I can access my cards / codes is by accessing the older Wallet version through the Play Store app; but only after trial and error after leaving a store.
Unacceptable.
Why is no one complaining?

Have you cleared the app's cache yet? This usually solves most problems with data loops.

I agree with SpookDroid -- you mentioned clearing app cache/data AND uninstalling updates. Instead of doing all of that, just clear the app cache, then force stop it. Then open it again, and see if the loop persists.

Another thing to try would be to boot into Safe Mode and see if it works then (since Wallet is a preinstalled app).

I did initially try Wallet after just wiping Cache, and then both Data and Cache. I then chose Uninstall Updates, a few times now - but the Force Stop 'X' is always unavailable / greyed out.

Today, after doing the rounds with it again, Google Pay appears now in my App Drawer. I'm almost certain it wasn't there when looking under G or P before, but Google apps do look similar. Pay was eventually auto updating to Wallet and Pay wouldn't open if I limited auto updates, yay!

Thanks for the Safe Mode option, I hadn't tried it, but Google Pay reappears in Safe Mode if that's what I had before rebooting; Google Wallet also now appears (after updating Pay) in both Safe Mode and after rebooting. It's still in the same Loop both times.


I'll see if Google gets their act together on this soon. It had definitely changed to a Google Wallet icon some time ago.

Funny just now if I'm in the App Drawer and long Press App Info on the Wallet icon, Wallet disappears the bottom of the app drawer reappears, and if I scroll back up there is Google Pay whistling away to itself.

Update : it's still a mess, but I can half use it if I bring it back to Google Pay before using it at a store etc

Gpay/Wallet is laughable at this stage. They had Google wallet before. Then Google Pay aka Android Pay and then Gpay. Then they bring back Wallet. Then I see an article here on AC that they are adding features to Gpay. HUH? Gpay is supposed to end June 4.

When you put stuff back on the shelves because you can't pay the correct price for them it is no laughing matter. Good thing I wasn't getting on a plane. Luckily my monthly coffee subscription code had stopped being available on Google Pay / Wallet 2 months ago and I have to just use their app (Pret). They must have seen it coming. Same with a train ticketing app.

Even Google Pay has changed now I've gone back to it with 3 tabbed screens now and with QR codes replacing bar codes.


This morning I did get a decent reply within 12 hours from an app review to Google.
The first link given only shows how to add loyalty cards to Wallet, but I'll use the direct link at a later time to explain the issue in detail. Place your bets on a successful outcome here!
