Help with speakerphone and screen timeout

I like to use speakerphone on my epic and use wifi and go on the Internet but my problem is my phone goes to sleep like every couple seconds and I have to hit the power button to wake it back up. I did notice that my screen goes off when my capacitive buttons do while my phone is on speakerphone not any other time and if I change the keyboard timeout to make the buttons on the bottom stay lit longer it stays awake with them. Does anyone elses phone act this way? I like to have my keyboard time-out to 3 seconds cause I personally don't like the bottom lights to stay lit but I always have to change that when I use speakerphone on a call. I just keep the keyboards on when screen is on.
I think its annoying for them to turn off.

But idk much about the speakerphone. Make sure you aren't blacking the sensor, idk if its still in effect on speaker mode but it could, as sometimes the engineers overlook things like that

Well I kept playing around with it and it must be a glitch on my phone or all. Sometimes the screen will stay on like its supposed to and other times it cuts off wirh the capacitive buttons. That's annoying cause if I'm on a call and it does that I can't use my phone at all cause the screen goes off. The sensor works like it's supposed to it doesn't turn the screen off on speaker phone. Anybody elses phone goes black when talking to someone on speakerphone?
