Help with volume key waking Xoom ....does yours also do this ( fustrated )

I have had the Motorola Xoom for around a year , recently or maybe I have just started to notice recently that when my Xoom is sleeping it can be woke up with the volume keys ....but only if music is playing ....so for example if I am listening to music at night laying in bed if I want to turn up a song or a podcast I use to be able to just hit the volume up key and all was good ....now when I hit volume up with screen off the screen turns on at the same time volume is being raised. It does this with the native music app and also power amp ...if neither if those apps are running the volume up or down key does NOT wake the screen. I hope I am explaining this well enough for someone to check there's or tell me if this is normal. I am on Android 4.1.2 any help with this I would so appreciate it.
