First time to the Android Central forums here.

I'm thinking of going on here because I'm planning to get a new Android handset in the near future and I expect to actually go through it pretty soon, when the time is right.

Hoping to have a good time here.

Thank you both! I was wondering about where would be the right place to ask for new phone opinions - I'm pretty not used to huge forums. Should I ask about it in one of the general discussion sub-forums, or on one of the relevant device sub-forums?

The Buyers Guides sub-forum seem to be more suited for more specific discussions about Android Central's own Buyers Guides, not separate individual recommendations.

We could start here :)

What are your preferences? Size, camera specs, battery life, SD card, unlocked/on contract, price ...

If this helps, I live in Malaysia.

Lately I've been taking a look at the Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 and A9 Pro 2016; it's kind of like picking between them and similar smartphones. I'm currently using a Nokia Lumia 930 and it's feeling a bit cranky lately - failing to save camera pictures, camera lockups, and suddenly shutting down while the battery appears to be well above 30% (and restarts just fine with battery to spare). Not to mention that I'm getting kind of annoyed by the software drought that I'm going to move to an Android smartphone. (I'll keep the 930 around though for mobile game development purposes.)

Mostly just have to make sure it's not a downgrade in the user experience - everything has to be smooth-sailing, if not flagship-level performance. A good ballpark is probably "does it burn up while web browsing for a significant period of time" and "will it run Asphalt 8 without hitching and without degraded quality settings, at a minimum of 1280x720 internal resolution?" No, I'm not interested in any of the Chinese brands, so forget about them.

The A5 and A9 Pro were actually pretty interesting, with some pretty tempting deals on them. The A5 is bundled with a Samsung flip cover and a 32 GB Samsung EVO microSD card. The A9 Pro is bundled with a 64 GB Samsung EVO+ microSD card. Both phones come with 2 years of warranty (extended by 1 year) instead of the normal 1.

Would a Snapdragon 615/Exynos 7580 on the A5 be a hindrance compared to a Snapdragon 800 on Windows 10 compared to a Snapdragon 652 on the A9 Pro? (I'm pretty sure there's no Exynos variant of the A9 Pro... is there?) Same for the battery life comparison. Size comparison, too.

Don't worry too much about the display or the cameras; I've demoed both of them in person.

The phones are priced RM 1399 and 1999 respectively including bundled items.

I don't have much information about those two phones, sorry. For that sort of price I would go for Moto G4 plus, Moto Z Play or OnePlus 3. Not sure about price and availability in your country and, yeah, they are Chinese :)

Haha, I'm mostly set in my mind on getting a Samsung when the time comes, mostly due to accessory trouble over here in Sabah ;) Not much of an incentive to go with a non-Samsung or any of the "Chinese Chinese" Android smartphones (Like a Xiaomi, for example, while Moto or OnePlus are much less so) here with regard to the ease of getting accessories such as cases.

I also get to use my dad's Galaxy S7 edge often and I'd like to have a similar experience, so there's that.

Welcome to the forums! I can understand why you'd be thinking about going with a Samsung product - they're great! Good luck with your decision! :)

Seems like the "deciding" part just got a lot more urgent as my Lumia 930 decided to croak yesterday night. Uh oh. Apparently the battery failed. Since I'm thinking of buying a new phone anyway since I don't want to use Windows phones anymore, I think I'll probably be doing it now.

Will keep an eye out for other similar phones, though. I hope I have a working smartphone by the end of the week.

Oh no! I'm so sorry that that happened to you! Please keep us updated on what happens with purchasing your new phone! If you have any questions about phones or brands of phones in particular, please let us know!

Welcome! A few years ago I spent 3 weeks in Malaysia on business, near Kuala Lumpur. I believe I was in Subang Jaya most of the time. This was in 2012 and I had recently gotten a Samsung Galaxy S3, my coworker in Malaysia was envious, but I liked his Sony Xperia which are not as common in the US.

I stayed one weekend at KL City Center near the Petronas Towers and had lunch at KL Tower, and also went to Petaling Street. I really enjoyed the variety of food there, and Old Town white coffee.

Sorry I don't have any advice on your phone but I just wanted to say hi.
