I changed the default notification sound in the regular phone settings and finally figured out I had to change the in app settings for texts as well. However I cannot make a change to the notification sound because the selection is greyed out and hidden. I can see that it is set as my old notification sound but I can't click to change. The selection underneath it "Vibrate: also vibrate when notified" is also greyed out/hidden from selection as well. There must be some over riding selection somewhere that is making these selections invisible in app?

I am referring to the native GS3 text app, not a third party app.

I'm not using the stock messaging app, but do you have the notifications option checked? If that's unchecked, you can't select any of the notification options.

Yes, it is checked, and I get a notification every time and it shows an icon in the status bar like that check box indicates I should. It is just the two selections under that one "select ringtone" and "vibrate" that are greyed out and do not allow me to change.

If you haven't already, try clearing the app's cache. Go to Settings / Application manager, and scroll all the way to the right, to the "All" tab. Then scroll down and tap on the Messaging app. Tap "Clear cache," then "Force stop." Back out the home screen, and restart the app.

If that doesn't fix it, you might try the same thing but this time clear data. The will reset all the app's settings to default. Unfortunately, it will also delete all your existing text messages.
