Is there a way to hide the alert tones I've copied to my memory card, so that they are still selectable (Settings-->Sound-->Ringtone & Vibration-->Phone ringtone), but yet not shown when browsing my music?

Hello!

Place or create a file named ".nomedia" in the folder holding your alarm- / notification- / ring tones.
Make sure that no wanted multimedia files are stored in that folder.

Hi forenuser,

I'm on the road with work and haven't yet had a chance to test this (my extensive alert tone collection is stored on my laptop at home), but from memory, this was the process used on my Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, so I suspect it should be fine with regards to my alert tones (I'll confirm on here when I get home at the end of the week)...

On a related matter however, I have another issue you might be able to help me with.

The ".nomedia" process you describe above has enabled me to hide videos from virtually all of my video playback applications - including third-party applications - but the pre-installed "Album" application overrides this and insists on showing all of the pictures AND videos I'd prefer hidden!

Is there a different file I can use for Album, that will hide photos and videos?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Edit: Surprisingly, it did not work - my alert tones are hidden from the "Walkman" app, but they are not visible in my alert tones list (Settings-->Sound-->Ringtone & Vibration-->Phone ringtone) either!
