Would like to pick up an extra charger or two... Anyone know of any good 3rd party or inexpensive Asus chargers?

I was actually just looking at some car/home chargers for when I'm traveling. Whatever you opt for, make sure it's pushing ~ 2A -- most chargers out there push either 0.5-0.6A, or 1A, and will be a lot slower to charge (or may not even keep you going when plugged in if actively using your tablet).

  EDIT: Just found this one from the same seller with only a slightly different description, but $3 lower price. Looking at the thumbnails, they show the same model number, so if we're safe in assuming they weren't lazy and just reposting 'similar' photos, it's a better deal.

Ok, so here's a dumb question... When plugging the N7 into a car charger, is there a difference in the power delivered? In other words, are there 500ma, 1amp and 2amp car chargers? I thought that all car chargers were the same...

Also, it looks like the first two come with a retractable USB whereas the last one doesn't... so that will account for some of the price difference...

And yes, there's a difference. Every charger, AC or DC, has a rated output it will deliver. You can pick up a generic charger for about $3, but it will be very, very slow to charge your N7 -- if it charges at all. Think of it like a fireman having to choose between using a firehose or a garden hose to put out a fire... Get the one that delivers the current.

Weird, my Scosche reVOLT 2-port USB charger (both are 2.1A) doesn't work... neither with the stock N7 USB cable nor any other one.

I picked up a GE travel surge protector with 3 standard outlets and 2 2.1a USB ports, and it doesn't work with the N7 (it does work with my RAZR), so I would stick with chargers that have been reviewed to work, or that you can pick up from a local store & take back if they don't work.

Any 1.5a or 2a wall or car charger works fine. I have several from previous phones/devices and they all work, but a 1a or 500ma charger would either not deliver enough charge or take FOREVER to go to a full charge.

Stick with 1.5a minimum, but 2a is best. Can go from 50% to 100% charge in about an hour.

Some have advised using lower powered chargers to trickle charge it. The USB spec is .4 - .6. I see different results however based on batt temp. Using a charger rated low will make it output full power and heat, somehow the batt gets hot as well. I the used a 1.5a charger which also got warm in the 100+ range, warmer than the .4 model. Now using the supplied charger the battery is hovering between 95 & 99 degrees when used and charging, less on idle.

Short version, get an official charger.

The device communicates itself as a media player. It needs to communicate and negotiate voltage. Some chargers fail that.

If you have Amazon Prime or can wait for the free shipping, pick up the USB chargers in the $10-$15 range. Anything cheaper will just not have enough power or take waaaaay too long to charge.

Oh wow I didn't know that. Interesting.. and also disappointing! Going to shoot an e-mail to Scosche to see if they have any response about that.

There is a resistance between some of the pins that tell the Ipad and the Galaxy tab that the charger is capable of a fast charge. I would imagine the N-7 does something similar. A regular wall charger can put out about .5 to 1 amp. If the tablet was in the fast charge mode it would burn up the charger. The resistors in the charger tell the tablet it is capable of about 2 amps. This switches the tablet into fast charge mode and it will charge the battery in 2 - 4 hours.

I found a lot more information when I had a Galaxy Tab in the Tab forum!

An Ipad charger will not charge a Galaxy Tap in the fast mode. Some chargers will not work with all Tablets because they probably use a different resistor wiring scheme.

For all my cable needs I go to monoprice...great price, products, and delivery. Best bang for your buck and if you're doubtful of the quality I can attest that never once had a problem with any of the cables, and if I do for some reason their customer service takes care of me (had to do an exchange once because I ordered the wrong cable once). I also like to check the customer reviews as well before buying anything......just imo

I can sort of customize things by picking a nice length cable that suites the situation, shipping is only like 2.95 I believe as well

I bought that Monoprice 4-port USB wall charger and it does NOT work with my N7. It works OK with my phones, iPods, and other random devices but not the N7.

Still not a bad deal if you have other USB devices though.

I have went through 12v/USB chargers all rated at 2.1 amps/3.1 amps. Nexus shows charging when it is off. It is apparent something Is lacking in chargers. Using 12v to micro cable and will trickle charge. Will check other 12v receptibles in car. Looks like the 12v/USB chargers go in current limit mode when Nexus is turned on.
