for those on a budget, here is a desktop/car dock that I made:

1st item, metal buisness card holder $3.00 (office depot has them)
2nd item, small 1/2 round magnet $2.50 (walmart neo-buttons )

Place the magent midway at the top right corner.
depending on the polarity of the magnet you get the desktop or car mode.
To switch, just flip the magnet (keep in same area) and it goes to the opposite mode.

Of course this would not be useful for use in a car, but its fun to play with at your desk.

It looks cool!!! Can you charge on your homemade stand?

Sure, just flip it with the charge port up.... slide the magnet to the left side upper corner..... unfortunately, the screen display will also be upside down.

Don't know why the Droid X can't auto rotate to either side like my old storm 1.

I got exactly that card-holder, rubber banded two post-it pads below, and now it charges in landscape

Thanks, I have a modified Docking Station for my desktop that allows me to use the Verizon case/holster combo without removing the case. I wanted to find a solution for my Toyota Tacoma that would allow me to use the Nav and phone functions while driving and be easy to install and remove the phone. Also needed to be out of the SUN and heat from the dash top because I live in southern New Mexico with lots of summer heat through the windshield. Window mount would not work and a Vent mount would block the airflow from the small air conditioner vents on the dash center. So I wanted to find a solution to mount the Droid X either off the center mirror or on the drivers side visor. I am only 5'8" tall and don't have a problem driving with the visor in the forward position all of the time. In fact it cuts out a lot of the sky glare and the UV coming in. So I was looking at trying to construct a mount that would hang on the visor near the center of the truck. Looking at your mount I saw that it was made of the flexible aluminum mesh with a thin solid border for shape. I went and looked at one and found that it just matched the length of the Droid X in the thinner part of the case with the thicker camera section hanging off the side. So I took a piece of scrap aluminum that I had that was really close to the same thickness of the main case body and placed it in the area where the cards normally sit. Then I took a small rubber hammer and bent the front lip down so that it was just snug on my case cover when I slipped the phone into it. For the USB cable I sighted through the mesh and cut a small rectangle out and fitted the cable into the connection. The cable is secure enough to lock the phone into the mount. On the upper side of the mount I cut out a small rectangle that allowed me to slip the normal back side of the mount over the bracket that the visor clips to. So I put the mount over the bracket and then clip the visor into it, locking the mount to the top of the visor (the "back" of the mount is now on top of the visor, and solidly locked on. Then I can slip the phone in and run my Motorola USB charging cable into the phone and then over the top of my mirror and down to my 12V-DC socket on the dash. I thought of running a non-coiled cable across to the drivers side pilar and then down and along the bottom of the dash to the charging socket but the coiled cable is working fine. As I said, I normally drive with the visor in the frontal position and this allows me to lower the visor down fully if driving into the sun as I did when testing it today. If you need to switch the visor to the side window, you will need to remove the mount, not a big thing but not recommended while driving...
I will try to get some pics tomorrow as it was almost dark when I finished the set up and testing. Worked fine even though I had to pay all of $6 for it at Staples.

Here are the pics of the Car mount. I updated to 2.2 Froyo so I can just select Car Dock for putting the phone into the car docked mode. Also use Google Navigator and it works fine with the mounting.

Hope this helps someone with some ideas.

Good Idea....

I'll have to apply your mods and try it out. See if my built in car GPS is as good as my DX.

I'm always concerned with introducing strong magnets near any of my computer stuff or phone. Those neo-button magnets pose no harm to the phone at all?

If not...this is a very, very, very good idea!! And even without the magnets it looks like it will work great!!

Thanks!!

Also....can anyone suggest, or is there an app, that will allow my Note 2 to have a landscape desk cradle display? My Samsung Stratosphere had one. Silly that the Note 2 does not.
