I have a new Moto Z2 Play (~two weeks new) from Verizon, stock ROM. Currently using OS 7.1.1, and the default launcher. Not sure if it's Android-base stock or Moto customized.

When I reboot the phone, a few of my homescreen icons disappear. I thought it was a problem with one app, then I noticed that others disappears from another homescreen page as well.

In case it's relevant, the ones I've noticed going awol are Out Of Milk, Sudoku (the one from Brainium), and a custom folder with two apps, SmartPay (Cumberland Farms mobile payments) and GasBuddy. GasBuddy disappears from the homescreens entirely, and Smartpay is dropped to the homescreen from the folder.

I can locate them in the App Drawer.

These are neither the newest nor oldest I've installed, nor were they installed in direct sequence. IOW, I've installed other apps before, after, and in between these.

I just checked details on these specific apps via Settings \ Apps, and they were installed the the SD card. I did not tell it to install there, nor would I know how. The SD card is formatted to extend the internal storage. How can I move these to the internal storage? Or get the card mounted in the system before the launcher loads?

No sign of corruption. The apps are there, they are in the app drawer. They launch just fine.

The problem appears to be one of time to mount the card vs time to load the launcher. I installed Nova Launcher, added the apps in question to its home screen, rebooted, and no problem.

So I bought the Prime version and made it my default launcher.
