If you know how to use ADB, type:

adb shell
su

Or from a terminal emulator like connect bot, type:

su

Download titanium backup from the market, if it asks you to allow or deny superuser permissions, then you are rooted

You will only be asked for superuser permissions if you have the Superuser App installed, which is different from root (su.bin) Also, titanium backup will only work if you have busybox installed, which doesn't come standard with rooting. Nick7's way is the most effective.

I think you guys are misunderstanding the OP's question. I think he wants to know how can you tell if you are rooted because he has, but does not notice a difference in performance. Is this correct scooled101? If all you did was root than you will not notice a difference. All rooting does is unlock the door. You would need to install a rom or kernel to open the door and notice a difference.

root isn't something that magically makes your phone super awesome. It is like.. hmm, how to put this...

It is like a key, that opens doors. If you don't need to open those doors, you don't need the key.

If you are trying to install nRom, ThundeROM, or my kernel, you will need root.
But there are step-by-step guides to get you there.

If you enjoy your phone the way it is, you don't need root.

Here's a question about the root test method of opening a terminal emulator and typing 'su'. What are the expected results?

I know that if you get the # prompt you're rooted.

But what do you expect to see if you are not rooted? I would expect that su.bin wouldn't even be there and you'd get an error indicating that it was an invalid command. However, after trying to apply temporary root on my dad's HTC Evo, I get "Permission denied". This indicates to me that su.bin was installed but I was not given access to it.

Just curious if I'm reading that correctly.

I know. I'm not saying what he said is incorrect because it is correct. If you're rooted you get a #. I just think the OP was looking for an actual change from just rooting and doing nothing else. I'm not trying to start anything just trying to help.
