Honestly, I could deal with the size of the HTC One (M8) if only....

Wow, I just downloaded it and it works great! I don't use Google now or Google search so for me it is absolutely perfect. I set the preference to always use screen lock and this is exactly what I've needed. Thanks!

Glad it works for you! I always use Google now, but this works so good that I've been using it since I got the phone. And I just stick with the search widget for Google now.

You don't necessarily have to pick the device up, you can use these gestures when it is laying down as well

Thank you! I've been arguing with people for a week now who keep telling me that you cannot use the gestures while the phone is flat and still. I never even knew that it was supposed to be in motion. I thought motion unlock meant because of using gestures, not because it's supposed to be moving. I've been double tapping to unlock while it's flat since I got the phone. You're the first person I've found online who also can unlock while the phone is flat and agrees. I have Tmobile. Don't know if that makes a difference. I even made a YouTube video just to shut this person up on YouTube who basically was saying that I was lying and must have magical powers. Lol. Proof video that the M8 can be motion unlocked while flat. - YouTube Almost every review for the M8 says you have to pick it up to use motion unlock but that isn't true at all.

It does need motion. Even the slightest bit. That's why when the little help screen pops up for each motion the first time you use the phone, it says to pick the phone up in portrait mode and double tap(or swipe). And in the setting it says that too. Also, hence the name, motion launch. It still works sometimes without motion. And I wish you could always do it whenever, without motion.

Here's proof it doesn't need motion. I do it all the time without motion. My M8 will sit on my dresser all night and when I wake up, I double tap and it turns on fine. Without moving it one bit. Not even rocking it. Proof video that the M8 can be motion unlocked while flat. - YouTube

what ive found is that my M8 definitely needs motion before it will acknowledge gestures to wake it.

Doesn't matter what position. Flat, vertical, upside down....My phone is in a car mount right now sitting vertical. It will not tap to turn on unless I tap it hard enough to generate movement, or I've just been using it.

After it detects motion, gestures work, and will continue to work for an unknown amount of time until the process goes to sleep again.

I've tested it on multiple surfaces (hard and soft) and it works every time without motion. I'm on AT&T

I don't have the M8, but tested it out at work yesterday. It was a Verizon M8 and I could double tap to wake and to turn off. But I'm reading that you can't do that. Just wondering how this M8 was able to do it.

Yeah that one of the problems I have with it besides the camera (don't like the chin either, but it's not very noticeable in person). However, I think there could be some ways around it if you root it (double tap status bar or screen to lock would help a lot).

You can't double tap to lock unless it's on the lock screen. If you unlock to the home screen, or are in any app, you can't double tap to lock. There are third party apps that will allow you to do this, but that gesture isn't one of the stock motion launch gestures.

I use the double tap gesture and have placed the screen off widget on my home screen. Easy on, easy off... never touch the power button

Do you use Google Now? If not, you can use the swipe up from the home button gesture (the one that activates Google Now) to use Screen Off and Lock instead.

Since you have the gestures this shouldn't be a problem, but I also don't get why manufacturers with big phones put the power button on the top

Actually, I'll both disagree with you and thank you because this answers a big problem I had. When my phone sits still for a while, I can't just tap to unlock. I have to smack it with my finger so that it moves a little (or pick it up) first, then it'll wake up from tapping. I thought mine was wonky but after reading this, I see that it's supposed to have motion before it unlocks. The video doesn't prove anything for me as mine will wake-up while perfectly still if I've handled it within the last few min. I'm not saying you're lying, just that mine doesn't wake while still if I've left it alone for a while. So glad I read this and figured out why.

My guess is so you don't accidentally turn the screen on in your pocket. Just a guess though

That's not even 'motion' that is just tapping. From what I hear before update the double tap was more unreliable than LG G2, but now it is closer to the double tap on my Flex.

Well the Mega's buttons are too easy to hit because they are so low....depends the size of your hands. I am liking the button layout on my Flex, those rear power and volume are nice with a big screen.
