Honor 8 Still Worth it in 2018?

I've owned an H8 before and loved it! I sold it a few months back but found a GREAT deal on one recently so I'm thinking about snatching one up again. But in 2018 it is still worth it?

Thoughts please :)

Hi there!

I still own my white Honor 8 and to be honest, even though I'm on the hunt for my next phone, it's *so hard* to put this one down. I still cannot believe how well it's held up (13 months) with barely any issues; especially given its price. Many flagships don't even last that long without encurring some issues!

In other words, I still a hundred percent recommend the Honor 8 in 2018. Yes, it's a few iterations behind now - given that the Honor 8 Pro and Honor View 10 have kind of taken over the Honor world now - but it's still such a great bang for your buck. I was literally just taking pictures of my cat (a regular occurrence) and am still in awe of how well the camera works.

If you'd like to go for the Honor 8 again, go for it! It'll still be a good buy. :)

For me, security is more important now especially with the breaches. No oreo is a drag, and, while not a security patch, honor re neging on the two year updates makes me fear that they might not keep up with updates, especially in light of the honor 5x

If you don't care about security updates

You're right - it is pretty upsetting that Honor is doing this. It's a phenomenal phone, and recent events have certainly dampened its spotlight, so to speak.

I was just about to buy one a few days ago and then I read that news. No Honor 8 for me. Its sad too cause that might have been the best phone I've ever owned.

I know how you feel! However, I did see somewhere (maybe even here on AC - I can't remember at the moment) that the Honor 9 is being released soon. I'm sure that phone will get the latest updates at least for a while; but then you may run into this same issue over a year from now. Hard to say at this point. I still recommend Honor devices for sure - it's just that the OS updates/security updates are a "thorn in the rose," so to speak.

I'd get the V10 if I could find one in the US. I know the 7X is out but the processor is to low powered for me. I REALLY like Huawei and Honor phones. I'm probably just gonna stick with them as my brand for a few years. The other option would be Pixel for me. But I'm all in on EMUI.

I agree with you: EMUI is awesome! I really love it too. Yeah, I loved the look of the V10; and its specs are awesome!

I really have a hard time now. The issue to me is that Huawei doesn't honor their commitments. Secondly, Huawei is not likely to get their phones launched on carriers in the usa , something that Huawei really wants. Penetrating the usa in any meaningful amount requires carrier support. So if they don't do well then they could abandon support for the phones in the usa

You are right on all counts. We really don't know what the future holds for Huawei/Honor and so we hesitate to either continue to buy their products and/or we hesitate to recommend them. If Huawei doesn't pierce the US market then it will be very difficult for them to continue to gain any traction in North America.

My boyfriend's brother was thinking about getting the Huawei P10 Plus and, though I do like the phone, I did not recommend it (contrary to my earlier post, I guess! :(). It's just hard to put your support behind a brand that doesn't necessarily support you.

Exactly. I get that it's business, but in business, sometimes you have to end up eating some cost to keep your promises,at least if you want to build up your reputation

Absolutely. It's best to stick with your promises instead of retracting them. It would be different if they had never promised updates in the first place - I mean, it still would've been disappointing news, but at least they wouldn't be in this "we promised something but now we won't deliver" dilemma. It won't be good for Honor, which really, really sucks. I love my phone and I like Honor but it's just a tough pill to swallow.

Exactly. If they didn't make a promise then this wouldn't have been a big issue. But they did and then they just said... Meh we aren't going to stick to our commitment, and also no compensation offered either.

Wow, you bring up a good point about no compensation being offered. It just makes me hesitate to get another Honor phone. I had been looking at the View 10 but wondered if they'd to the same thing to the 10 that they did to the 8. Once you retract something once, it may make it easier to do it again with another product. Hopefully this doesn't happen again.

I have owned two honor phones and it has happened to both of them. After the first one I was trying give them another chance. Second one though... Not so sure.

Yeah, this is not a good sign of them promising any kind of future support to upcoming iterations...

Depends - I think if you want a good camera, it's the best deal on the market (still). If you want a good phone overall, I'd recommend something else, like an original pixel

But a pixel will cost you a bit more

I think it's a good phone and a good camera. Possibly the best bang for the buck. As to Oreo, my Mate 9 got it and, other than additions to the camera, I haven't found anything remarkable. Maybe I'm just missing it. I still enjoy my Honor 8 when I want a smaller phone in my pocket.
