to keep pushing the envelope in terms of style and content. As an Android fan boy, I applaud HTC's thinking outside the box design wise. And I hope that makes Samsung nervous enough nough to consider build materials in the near future. And I hope Samsung's continued success will encourage HTC to loosen its tie a little and inject some fun into their devices, regardless how gimmicky it might look. Android desperately needs HTC to stay above water. I hope HTC is at least successful enough with the One and the First to put away some cash for future products. Actually, I hope HTC shocks the Android community with surprising sales numbers. They deserve it if only because they continue to boldly think outside the box, trying to place a premium on style and beauty as well as function. Style is not something Android devices have been known for. HTC, followed by LG are quickly changing that.
Not much to say about Samsung for they need no introduction. They have a wildly successful name brand. They've kept Android relevant. I hope the smear campaign against HTC is over. That is an embarrassing episode for them. Very poor form. I'm all for playful ribbing and light horseplay, but what Samsung engaged in was small and crass. Let's hope, as Samsung said, that this was a small group of employees who acted alone. Because I won't support bullies with my hard earned money and loyalty.
Looks like LG just set a personal sales record with their latest glass encased Optimus.
Looking forward to what verse the Droid series will contribute to the Android living poem.
These are heady times for Android.
The Samsung S3 is the most interesting and fun mobile device I've ever seen. I expect the 4 to be even more so.
The HTC One is the most gorgeous device I've ever seen. It's best examined outside in the sunshine. You just want to hold it all day. It feels so right in the hand. Quietly brilliant. Though it's time for HTC to get brilliantly LOUD!

Quietly brilliant.

Clever. :p

I agree with most of your points. I'm really looking forward to what 2013 has in store for Android, in both hardware and software. Samsung's next bit flagship, HTC's stakes with the One this year, Google improving Android with I/O next month, etc.

Good thread! I also hope they inspire one another. I'm an Android fan, so always choose the best Android phone for me at the moment. This time around, that's the HTC One. Last time around, it was the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. In the future, it may be Motorola of LG. I wish more people would take an attitude of rooting for Android, instead of rooting for Samsung or HTC or Motorola or LG, etc. I want them all to succeed, because Android will be better for it.

It's nice to see posts that have the right idea!

I agree with all your points. I really hope HTC stays afloat too, just to inject some competition and threat to Samsung. Having a 2 horse race (Apple and Samsung) won't be good for the industry. Apple will sit back knowing that most iOS owners will likely continue buying iOS devices as long as they show some kinda of upgrade, and same thing with Samsung. Having a couple of other manufacturers in the race will benefit the us/consumers.

Actually, I hope HTC and Samsung continue down the design paths that they currently offer, by taking some cues from their competition. HTC with their aluminum phones and a less obtrusive skin, and Samsung with their feature rich phones with swappable SD cards/batteries. The best thing about Android right now, imho, is the choice available to the consumer. I'd hate to see that go away.

I also hope that Samsung and HTC learn from each other HTC needs some features Samsung needs to get some good designers in their to work on build quality and the look of touchwiz.shoot lets hope Motorola and Sony step up Sony with imaging and Motorola with it's ability to package such large batteries into their phones, and radio tuning.

Htc should keep up the aesthetics and add in a removable battery

Good thread and I agree. Competition will drive both companies to try hard with their phones :).

Conversely, Samsung should keep up the removable battery and add in some aesthetics, right?

Exactly!

With Samsung's features, removable battery, large storage (internal, with or without microSD) AND a metal body, it would be a perfect phone.

I hope so too. They seem to be taking the apple approach in terms of upgrading their phones. That is with marginal improvements. I've used my s3 side by side with the s4 in the sprint store and there is no difference, save the s4 has more bloat and gimmicks.

It's not quicker and doesn't have a better camera?

And the feel is different, the s4 is snappier, better screen, bigger battery, IR blaster, and why when someone not logged brings something new to the table is called a gimmick? These features are very useful

+1 for you if you like touchwiz, I'm just saying 4.1.2 touch wiz on the s3 sucks up the ram and really slows the phone down. I'm glad to see samsung bringing more features to the table but really a lot of it just seems like it was added to attract new customers not keep new current ones. I don't even run it anymore, personally I can't stand that green and orange fugliness.

I like the premise of this thread a lot. As a note owner I think the note 3 will probably be a better device because of the one.

Maybe, but we do know that the note 3 will be aluminum.

The s4 was supposed to be, but they couldn't get enough ready in time

But then it would be heavier. A phone that size would make your hand fall asleep from holding it for so long when you are watching a movie.

That's the beauty of choice. Samsung didn't commit any crimes with the S4, so let's not try to indict them just because we may not agree with some of their choices.
You don't like the colors. That's acceptable. I'm sure there are Android devices that have colors more suitable to your palate.
But "fugliness?" Can we try to keep the convo on an adult level?
Remember, it's only a cell phone.

Absolutely. I'm sure every other manufacturer of Android devices said "Damn!" when they saw the HTC One present itself. There's already talk that Samsung is uneasy about the prospect of a unibody, aluminum clad One with gorgeous lines, flowing curves and interesting attention to detail. This uneasiness is great because it will probably propell Samsung and others to eschew simple plastics for more premium materials and more thoughtful design. Android fans deserve this across the board. We should demand products that LOOK like a $700+ device as well as perform like one.
Competition is necessary for advancement.
Apple was forced to stretch their screen size order to continue to compete with Android. We'll most likely see a 5" iphone before long. Apple fans can thank Android for that ahead of time.
This same process will play itself out in Android land.
It only takes one bold successful brush stroke to make every other artist wipe clean his canvas.
