hope you all know that tethering data plan is REQUIRED with webtop dock!!

The tethering plan is only required if you want to buy the phone/dock bundle. If you buy the laptop dock on its own you don't need the tethering plan.

Looks like the rebate and the promotion price are contingent on getting the tethering package, it's not required in using the dock. If I am correct, this thread should probably be locked to not spread misinformation.

There is one commenter on engadget who mentions that the firefox browser will not allow a connection to att broadband unless you have the tethering plan. Don't know who this is but...

The message that shows gives a phone number to sign up for tethering or says to connect via wifi. So it sounds like the tethering plan IS required even if you don't bundle.

Dude, you just contradicted yourself there. BTW, trusting a random commenter isn't really the best source of information, IMHO. I'll wait till official reviews where the reviewers have the actual product in their hand, before making a decision.

Yeah right in AT&Ts announcement it said to use firefox you have to pay for tethering.

SOO stupid.

Where's the contradiction? Connect via wifi or pay for tethering..

And while I certainly don't trust everything written randomly in an internet forum, raised your hand if you don't believe att will charge a tethering fee to use the dock. No hands? Anyone? It sounds plausible enough to me

500 bucks for the webtop dock is is kind of a lot, i will not give up my unlimited to save money on the webtop dock.

You said you NEEDED to get a tethering plan to use it, but then also said you could use it with wifi. So wouldn't wifi mean that you don't need the tethering plan?

Sure, it is plausible, but as of right now I don't know whether AT&T will charge or not, and that is why I am waiting until it is official.

I see. Well forgive my wording. It is reflective of how I feel. The laptop dock is pointless unless it is an extension of the phone and the phone's data plan. Adding a tethering plan makes this completely useless to me and at $500 or even $300, I can think of much better ways to burn through data

This is a huge mistake as it will discourage many customers. But I think there is more too it than just to get the bundled pricing. I contacted my AT&T rep and he told me that you can not add bundling to the unlimited data package - so if you want to use the firefox browser and you have a grandfathered unlimited data package you have to give that up...for a device that will encourage lots of data usage.

AT&T just killed the sales potential of the laptop dock. Crazy.

I was going to get the laptop dock...but not now. I will be getting the other docks...but not the one that I wanted the most. I am hoping that lots of people reject this stupid pricing (for both the hardware and data) and that AT&T changes pricing before launch next month.

Speaking of next month...that really sucks. I was hoping to have this phone in Feb...now it is the first week of March...two months after CES.

Exactly! I think AT&T is trying to find ways to get people to dump their grandfathered unlimited plans. As is - what they are doing to the hardware and data pricing for the laptop dock is suicide. Hopefully they will wake up between now and the final release date.

Hopefully people will pre-order the phone without the laptop dock in enough volume that they realize they need to do something to move those units.

I for one am not going to preorder the laptop dock and am going to make a big deal to the AT&T folks that the price for hardware and data killed the deal for me.

I am thinking along the lines of amazon/newegg carrying it and buying it wholesale price.
