Hotspot usage only a few months out of the year

I'm researching hotspots to give as a gift to my parents this Christmas. They go RVing throughout the summer, and as such, would benefit from having a low hassle hotspot for two to three months out of the year. I do not anticipate them using it the rest of the year.

In my research, the VZW backed straight talk would work best for the locations they frequent, and the process looks fairly straightforward. The one question I am still unclear about is the process of "activating" an account. Aside from creating an account on the straight talk website, etc. What is involved? Is it as simple as buying a straight talk data card and inputting the code/pin into your account on the stright talk website?

In addition, what happens to an account if it sits unused for 10 months? Does a user need to "reactivate" it and if so does this cost additional money? (above and beyond the cost of getting a new data card obviously)

I'd appreciate any insight given, thanks.
