How are updates handled?

I had a Nexus 5, returned it for an AT&T moto X, unlocked since day 1. Wife has a Nexus 5. She never received any of the Kit Kat updates OTA, I side loaded them all. Her N5 did finally receive 5.0, but our Nexus tablets have not.

I have a Nexus 6 on the way, to compare to the Note 4. I ordered from T Mobile, I will never boot it up on T Mobile ever, going to cancel the service on day 1.

How will it get updates?

1. Will it be updated when Google pushes the updates?

2. Will it be updated when AT&T gets the updates since it has an AT&T SIM?

3. Will it get updates when T Mobile gets updates, since it came from T mobile?

My son has the developer edition of the Moto X, on AT&T, it gets updates when Moto pushes that those. I am worried that I will get them when ATT pushes them.

Thanks.

I am guessing Google pushes them. But if this is like how the Samsung Galaxy nexus where Verizon controlled it then t-mobile will be pushing the update to that phone since it's an t-mobile .
