Questions Re Accessing My Device Via My Win OS Desktop

For the very first time today, I successfully plugged in my Galaxy Tab into my Win 7 OS desktop PC (the purpose of this is to experiment); I did this via a USB connection.

In Windows Explorer I can see that I can create NEW folders in my device (for the time being to be used for data storage); it appears that I would be using my device's internal storage. But I'm very concerned that in doing so I would create some major unintended consequences, i. e., I would crash my device. Has anyone tried doing this?

A 2nd purpose for my experiment is to directly access my device's micro SD card, but it's not showing up in Explorer; any ideas as to why not?

Finally, has anyone found any creative/labor saving/etc. uses for accessing an android device via Windows?

It is fine to do.

Is the SD card showing on the tablet properly? It should show on the PC.
