How can I clear the default Huawei Home launcher on Ascend Y550?

Can't clear default Huawei Home launcher on Ascend Y550

I recently bought the Huawei Ascend Y550 and updated to Android 4.4.4 upon set up. After that I downloaded the Google Now launcher with the standard message to clear default home launcher but when I go to the settings page it's greyed out.

I have attempted disabling Huawei Home, clearing all the data and caches as well as clicking 'reset all preferences' in the 'manage apps' drawer to no avail.

In an attempt to solve the problem I also downloaded an application manager which lets me see all the default apps and it shows Huawei Home is selected, and Google Now as an option but unable to be set as the default.

Have no idea how to fix this problem without rooting the phone.

Welcome to Android Central! This thread is over a year old, so I can't be sure if you're talking about the same device as the OP, and if your situation is exactly the same or not. Please give more details, thanks.
