I need to change a contacts phone number on my Galaxy S6 but it won't let me delete the old number. I have to delete the contact completely and then reenter with the current phone number otherwise it continues to show both numbers. How can I delete the old number?

You can hit edit from the top right corner. Hit the "-" and then add the new phone number. Or just edit the existing number

Or go to Google Contacts - there are a lot more options at the site than on the phone.

How have I never come across this? I just looked and holy smokes, so much easier than doing it on the phone. After changing phones I always seem to have a mess in my contacts and it kept getting bigger and this format will make it much easier...off to do some housekeeping...

I am having the same difficulties in editing a contact's page. I cannot delete her old mobile number though her new number has been entered and saved. I went to my Google contacts lists online but that didn't help either as her old number wasn't actually shown on there though it is on my Samsung S6 phone. The EDIT button does not work at all. Help please.

I am having the exact same response, the google doesn't show the old number but it is still on the phone, and can't get rid of the old number on the phone.

the following does not work :"You can hit edit from the top right corner. Hit the "-" and then add the new phone number. Or just edit the existing number". the old number is still displaying under the contact but cannot be edited anymore....this is very annoying as one can still select the old phone number....

I am also having the same problem as the others. "Solution" did not work. If I edit and then hit the minus button, the extraneous number disappears from the edit mode, but still shows up in contacts.

If you have Verizon like me, you have to re-sync to the Cloud - b/c your Phone's Contacts are pulling in from 2 possible locations (Google and Verizon Cloud).

I re-synced to the Cloud so it saw a deletion of the original phone number, and voila, your Contact no longer pulls in your old # from the Cloud storage location.

If it can not be edited or deleted, then check what accounts are synced and linked to the contact. If Facebook or similar is linked to it, you can not edit or delete the # unless you unlink the contact and other account.

First off prior editing the contact number, make sure to check what contacts are you viewing. to check, go to Contacts - More (upper right corner) then Settings. Under Display you can see Contacts to Display.

It might be that contacts is both saved in different repository -- device, simcard.

Once checked, make necessary editing in the contacts. I hope this helps.

go to settings- manage links, I had a person linked to other address books. Once they are unlinked I could edit the old contact info. I hope that makes sense.

Welcome to Android Central! Can you be more specific? Are you talking about the Call Log, or the Frequently Called list in the Phone app?

Checking what it's linked to is the answer. In my case, it was whatsapp. Once that link was removed, the number was removed from the contact. The question is, why am I forced to search for the solution online?

When using android's contact app and editing a contact, sometimes on the edit page there will be two tabs at the top like "Google" and "phone". Check both tabs as sometimes there is data in both.

I just had the same issue and if you add the new contact number to the exiting contact then close everything down and go back into your contacts list there should be two contacts showing, one with the old number and one with the new. You can delete the old contact from here. Hope this helps!
