Export a directory on the Mac using SAMBA then use ESFile Explorer on the Nexus to mount the exported directory and thend to do a copy. Alternatively use Dropbox.

I use Android File Transfer to copy files and music btw my MB and N5.

Android File Transfer. The easiest way to do so in my opinion. It can't get any more simpler and bullet proof. I'd say.

After looking at Dropbox, I picked Google Drive for its direct download. VLC found the local files with no effort. I didn't pursue Android File Transfer because I don't happen to be able to port from USB-C (Nexus 5x) to any other flavor of USB—at least not without shlepping out to an electronics store only to find it closed at this hour.
