AC Question

I have a Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy S3 that is about 2 years old, it's my significant others' phone that is having the issue but let's just call it mine. It was on the charger and quit charging and will not turn on. I have read several different posts and tried to find fixes, but there's one difference in my phone that makes it hard to find an answer.

The phone does not have a charging light while plugged up, nor is it being recognized by my computer.

Is there a way I can still either upgrade the firmware or something to fix it? I have amateur skills for doing the complicated roots and stuff (not sure what to call it?) so with a guide I can handle about any technical way to fix it, I would even be willing to take it apart and do minor stuff on the inside.

Is there anything at all I can do? Or a way I can get Straight Talk to fix it for little to nothing? I also have another S3 (this one being mine) that I bought around the same time. Is there any preventive measure I can take to stop this from happening to mine as well?

Thank you!
