How can I fix Unfortunately, Messages Backup and Sync has stopped?

[AC Question]

"Unfortunately, Messages Backup and Sync has stopped"

Whenever I open my messages app, this error shows up and the app freezes. I've cleared cache and data and restarted my phone a few times with no luck. What should I do? (Samsung Galaxy s6, 5.0.2)

Welcome to Android Central! Did you also wipe the system cache partition, which is different from clearing an app cache? https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-21095
