What is the use of an SD Card which I cant install anything to?

Hello. You can only move sections of downloaded apps from internal storage to the sd card. The sd card is mainly to store media.

I understand there are limitations with the 1st gen Moto E, along with some HTC models in that they only allocate a limited amount of space for apps.
See if moving apps via Settings - Apps helps a little. It won't move an entire app.

I have the es file manager app which allows me to move apps from internal (SD 0) to external (SD 1). Within its settings you can set SD 1 downloads as your default download.
