How Can I get my OTG to work with my keyboard?

I'm in a bit of a weird situation with this. I am using an LG VS501 that says it is OTG compatible. I plugged in the cable and tried my keyboard, a mouse, and a thumb drive but none of them worked as they did not receive power. I then plugged in a charger cable and connected it to my tablet and voila it charged it! I've tested the cable on my tablet and the keyboard mouse and drive all work. I don't know why my phone is doing this and I wondered if there were any plausible solutions that don't require taking things apart.
