How can I get the Scan a Barcode voice command to work?

Scan a Barcode voice command

HTC One M8 (no root)
Google voice command of "Scan a barcode" only brings up a search list of scanner apps. I thought this feature was native to google? (At least all the voice command lists make it sound that way)

How can i get this command to work?

I think this particular feature got deprecated a while ago. I remember it once worked (a LONG time ago), but it's not working now on all my devices (Note 4, Tab S, Note 10.1, and a friend's Moto X)

I've been using the Amazon scanner with great success, but I can't find a way to either make it a voice command or add a widget to a home screen. I have to launch the app and route to the scanner every time, and I'm all about saving steps.
