How can I play a downloded mp3 file on my Samsung Galaxy J7?

Hello, I am having an issue with playing mp3 files on my phone. I want to use them as ringtones, but when I try to listen to them first in Sound Picker, no sound comes out. I turned off Highlights Only, but still nothing. I downloaded the same files to my computer and they play just fine. I tried transferring an individual file from my computer to the downloads folder on my phone, but still nothing. I tried downloading a music player app, but no dice. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Do they play using Google music on your phone?

If you haven't restarted the phone since the download, do they play if you tap them in a file manager? (Downloads don't trigger the Media Scan, so they won't show up in the ringtone selection. If they're showing up in ringtones but not playing from there or from a file manager, they're getting corrupted in the download.)

In addition to restarting the phone, you will need the mp3 files to be in the correct folder for its intended use:
/Ringtones
/Notifications
/Alarms
