How can I prevent my phone from trying to activate?

I have a MotoX that used to be my primary phone until I upgraded a few months ago. Now I'd like to use it as a wifi only device, mostly a remote control, music player, etc. It's been working fine until I did a system update and now it's trying to activate. Is there any way I can make it stop trying to activate?

Shut the phone down and remove the sim card.

I have the same problem. and shutting down the phone and removing the sim card doesn't help anything. I haven't had a sim card in mine in like two years. and since the new update I can't get it to stop trying to activate
