How can I prevent pocket taps/presses without Lock?

prevent pocket taps/presses without Lock?

New to smartphones. Every time I take my Moto G out of my shirt pocket I see some App or Setting screen that could only have been called up by a accidental tap/press. I know locking the phone could probably prevent this, but is there any way other than locking - preferably mild, graceful and easy to escape?

You have two choices...
1) Lock the screen
2) Turn off the phone
