Device locking up after factory reset

I have been using an S5 (Verizon) for about a year with no issues. Two days ago, I got a new phone and moved the S5 to my husband's VZ account. After moving all my contacts and other items from the S5 to the new phone, I decided to do a factory reset on the S5 so the phone would be nice and clean to import hubby's info.

I did the reset via settings/backup & restore. It went smoothly, no issues during the process. Once the phone was up and running, I started attempting to move his data over. I immediately started noticing some lag time and/or issues with locking up. The phone would eventually either start responding or come up with an error box. The messages varied, but were generally "Play Store has stopped responding", or "TouchWiz has stopped responding". I did some research and troubleshooting towards those specific apps and stopped getting those errors (cleared cache, uninstalled updates to Play Store), but it did not resolve the lag or freezing. All through the day today, the phone has been lagging, sometimes rebooting on it's own, freezing to the point of needing to pull the battery, and so on. It currently has Lollipop 5.0 installed. I checked for system updates, but it keeps showing no updates available.

Frustrated, I decided to do another factory reset in case the install had gone awry. Once the setup screens came up, I immediately began seeing lag again. On a screen asking for gmail login, I'd start typing, then get a 10 -15 second freeze, then it would start responding again. Upon completing setup, I'm seeing freezing just trying to navigate around the device. I tried going into safe mode, but continued to see the freezing while in safe mode as well.

I'm unclear where to go from here. Prior to the reset, this phone was working fine with no issues. That leads me to believe it isn't a hardware issue, or it's some serious coincidental timing on bad hardware. Any input is appreciated!

Hello and welcome to Android Central sserc!

A Factory Data Reset will not clear the phone's memory, (sometimes called SD card), nor will it wipe the external SD card. You should try doing a Full Wipe+Factory Data Reset as per #2.3, #2.4 and #2.5 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide to clear out any detritus from your old setup.

Or bring the phone into a Verizon company store and ask them if they can reflash it for you. That will wipe everything in one easy shot. (You can actually do that yourself, using the [Samsung] How to flash Stock ROM via ODIN guide.) It gives you an out-of-the-box phone.

Re: Device locking up after factory reset

Thank you both, I wasn't aware of either options. Going back to the VZ store was going to be my next step if I couldn't figure it out. I'll try the full wipe first and post the results.

Re: Device locking up after factory reset

That wasn't the solution, but did lead me to the solution. When I went into Settings/Storage to format the external SD card, it said "insert card". Odd because there was a card inserted - the same one I have been using for the last year. I powered down, reseated the card, booted up, but it still wasn't recognizing the SD card. I pulled the SD card from my husband's old phone (an S3) and replaced the one in the S5. Beautiful things started happening and none of them involved lag time or locking up :) That fully solved the issue. Thanks for leading me down the right path!
