How can I unlock an encrypted phone if I forgot the encryption code?

I encrypted my phone for some reason I don't even remember... and now I've forgotten the password / code set to get into iT

Welcome to Android Central! Encrypting a phone is not something to do lightly. It's irreversible. And if you forgot your PIN, then you're kind of up the creek. Try using Android Device Manager to reset the PIN. https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/3388218?hl=en
