Unlock htc one m8

I would like to buy a locked htc one m8 with a clean esn (carried by sprint) and unlock it myself could i do that even though i'm not the original contract owner? I asked this question on htc forums and i still have no answer

Re: Unlock htc one m8

Whats the goal of the unlocking? Boot loader, SIM?
I ask because other then putting some custom ROMS on a Sprint version theres not much that can be done with it. Its CDMA hardware unit, not GSM.

Re: Unlock htc one m8

well I travel alot so i would like to change carriers on a month to month basis depending on where i go and i heard it was law that you need to be able to unlock any phone from its carrier when it has been paid fully and the locked m8s can be $50 cheaper than the unlocked

Re: Unlock htc one m8

Ah ok so your referring to Sim unlocking, not boot loader unlocking. Now that we have that cleared out id recommend buying a GSM unit. It will have more flexibility for you to use it with different carriers.
Are you traveling in the US or outside the US?
Locked or unlocked the CDMA units have less use when tyring to use them on other carriers.
If your staying in the US then ONLY sprint phones work on Sprints network. Same with Verzion. Their CDMA units and the ESN is master programmed into the phone will only match up with the esn list for the respective carrier. So taking a Sprint phone to Verizon will not work. They will not accept it.

But if you take a TMO phone, unlock it, it will work on ATT, and visa versa, but you also need to know there are limitations with that. Each carrier has its own bands and protocols. So with TMO you have 2G EDGE, 3G HSDPA+ and 4G LTE. But they dont use the same bands as say ATT..

Theres a lot to learn here.. this will also apply when traveling to different countries. I would suggest googling some of this and come back if you have specific questions.

I think there's some mis-information here. It is my understanding that every Verizon smartphone is unlocked out of the box.

So basically, it can be used on another carrier, but you may lose some 4G connectivity since the phone doesn't have radios for the new carrier's bands. But you will be able to make calls and texts and you can (obviously) use wifi, so it may still be workable for you.

Re: Unlock htc one m8

Feel free to point out where the mis-information is....
Doesnt matter if a Verizon phone is locked or unlocked you still cant use it on Sprints network, and your very limited on ATT and TMO as Verizon phones are designed for Ver. LTE US only OR GSM international roaming, which most of those frequencies are not used in the US.
