How can I upgrade my moto g 1st. generation from Lollipop to Nougat?

I have had the Moto G for a bit over 2 years and the only thing I haven't liked about it vs my Iphone I had is that this phone doesn't automatically wake up and display the recipient and first part of the email and text. I just got my wife an LG with Nougat and her phone does do that. I realize mine isn't supposed to be able to be updated but I've seen workarounds online but not sure if they're totally safe.

The only possible way I can suggest is to flash a custom ROM for your model number. Try lineage, that has a broad base of devices.
