how can you tell if a cell phone is unlocked

received a Verizon galaxy s4 from a friend I will be using it with straight talk. How can I tell if it is unlocked?

Welcome.
On the boot up screen, there is a picture of a lock at the bottom.
It is either locked or unlocked. That will tell you which one the phone is.
