How can you turn on an alarm witgout turning on the ringtone?

How, on android 4.4.4, can I turn my alarm on without taking the phone off vibrate with no ringtone?

Under Settings -> Sound -> Volumes you should be able to adjust Ringtone/Notification, Alarms, and Media volume independently.

Alarm volumes should override the system volume. If there is no alarm sound for you, check the alarm settings in the clock app. There is an alarm volume setting.
