How come we're not getting new Emojis also?

My boyfriend has iOS (iphone 5) and the other day I saw he has a lot of Emojis that my phone doesn't have. He uses Whatsapp, so I saw a lot of them. Am I missing something? And I saw on the news that they're going to get new Emojis soon with an update. How come we don't? I don't like Apple and iOS , only like certain very few things but anyways are these going to take longer to be on Android/samsung or whatever manufacturer? Or at least on Whatsapp?

I've been wondering the same thing for a while now and I hope someone can answer and give a reason as to why android is so far behind when it comes to emoji's

I know right? Maybe it's not a big thing, but a lot of people like to express themselves better using them. I really hope they bring us and update or something with them. I've been using emoticons and all of this sort of stuff since MSN Messenger.
