How did HTC join the "Droid series?

What are you guys talking about? Droid is a Google branding for their OS. HTC, Samsung, and Mototola are all independent phone manufacturers whose phones operate Droid OS (as well as Windows Phone 7). HTC's first Droid phone was either the Eris or the Desire (can't remember) but they have never been affiliated with Moto....

Wrong. The OS is Android.

And if you go by that, HTC's first Android phone was the first Android phone ever: the T-Mobile G1. The first HTC branded phone was probably the Hero/G2 Touch (not to be confused with the Sprint Hero or T-Mobile G2) or something. Or at least that was the first Android phone with HTC Sense. But yes, their first phone in the "Droid" series was the Eris, but the Desire isn't, and never will be, part of the Droid series.
