Dropped your phone...

Pixel 4 came of my bike at 20mph onto road. screen protector and light case heavily damaged , tiny crack at initial impact point. Seems reasonable

Had my trusty Moto Z3 in the pocket of my sweatshirt... went to put shirt back on, phone fell maybe two feet onto a tile floor. No visible damage and it still vibrates like it's alive, but the screen is completely black. They go for about $125 on Swappa and the repair quote was more than 200, so... on to an LG G8X for me.

The last phone I ever dropped and broke was my Samsung Galaxy S9. I had purchased it for my birthday on a Prime Day Sale for $350.00, which was brand new, and at the time the best deal I had ever seen. For about 5 months I have this, enjoying almost all of it except for the battery life. One day, I go to a meeting. It was a very fun and casual one, with not a lot of formality. The chairs, however, were very unstable. Eventually, I ended up falling out of one while my phone was screen down in my back jeans pocket. Let's just say that the screen turned on and the processor and everything else still worked, but it was bent along the curved edge and had a hundred hairline cracks all across the screen. We tried to replace it but alas, it was impossible. I went back to my old Moto G4 for about a month, before I finally got a Huawei Mate 10 Pro from a family member. The battery and cameras and speed are better and I'm happy. Lesson learned, don't fall out of chairs with an expensive phone.

My thing is that I'm very clumsy and don't always look where I'm going. I don't drop my phones often but I'll bang into a wall with it and I've slammed into a wall with my Pixel 2 more than a time or two. Thankfully, it was fine.

There were two occasions that stick out in my mind (because they were horrible) where I actually dropped two different phones in such a way that it could have caused serious damage.

The first time was with my all-glass (of course) Honor 8. I was staying at my in-laws' home and they have wooden floors. My phone fell off of the bed and smashed, screen-down, onto the floor. My Honor 8 was fine, but my tempered glass screen protector cracked. I bought a new one and was good to go. Thankful it turned out that way.

The second time was, again, involving a bed (apparently I shouldn't use phones in the morning or at night). While on vacation in PEI last year, I was a silly person and left my Pixel 2 on the arm of our fold-out couch. I forgot it was there and knocked it off of the couch, and it too smashed on a wooden floor. Luckily, another tempered glass screen protector saved me from crying.

This makes me worry for my poor, unsuspecting plastic-film-protected S10.

I would have thought either, or both events, would have converted you into a devoted user of tempered glass screen protectors

Oh, I am! Absolutely. But tempered glass with my S10's curved screen has been a bit of a nightmare.

However, once I install my second film protector from Samsung, *maybe* I'll try again and look for another tempered glass screen protector. I had one with a cut-out for my in-display fingerprint sensor and didn't like it. Whitestone Dome (or whatever brand it is called - I've had too much coffee and not enough food today lool) or a similar brand may be my next stop.

It only took one bad fall for me to see the value of glass screen protectors...and it wasn't even a "fall". I had rested my phone on a tilt against a basketball pole, and it tipped over face down onto the blacktop. No height, just a straight fall, but when I picked it up, the glass screen protector was cracked. I'm sure that the actual screen is stronger than the screen protector, but that scared me enough to never go without a screen protector.

Meh, so far the best one was the factory installed on the Note 10+
I'm going go with a plastic one again. I need scratch resistant and the Samsung one actually saved the 10's screen from a 3 foot drop onto a piece of 1/8" thick aluminum at a right to the ground. Marred the protector but not the screen.
How do they always seem to land the worst way possible?

It's so cute how the S-pen pops out after a bad fall just to let you know it was a good smack down :(

oh, I remember having some kind of a Huawei and it was completely immortal.
when I was living in a dorm, I had a top bed, and my phone used to lie on the top of a closet (lol safety security hashtag)
and once, I just accidentally touched it with my leg and it flew down (6.5 feet), and there was NO damage at all.

Wow! That's an amazing story and an amazing phone to boot! I like where you kept your phone, that's pretty ingenious.

I have an Otterbox defender on my S8. Most of my very rare accidental drops have been from incidents where my wrist just goes limp for a second causing me to drop the phone. No damage whatsoever. Meanwhile earlier this year my dad somehow accidentally cracked the corner on his new S10e while it was in Samsung's leather case, so even though (I think) he hasn't yet gotten around to fixing it, he got himself an Otterbox Defender Pro earlier back in February.

I put it once into my shirt pocket confident of not dropping it. Had to pick up something from the ground and boom it slipped out of the pocket and broke the screen...

It's always that you don't expect that hits you hardest

Oh no! You're right - it's those unexpected accidents that make you cringe... And maybe cry.

s10e, put it in my car mount and forgot to close it. fell out when I hit the gas and chipped the screen. hit the tiny gap between the screen protector and case.
I had just paid it off, and cancelled the insurance.
